I have been on Effexor for a few months and in
those months i have uplifted and become a more
social person but I have gained considerable amount
of weight. I eat normally as i always have but during
the time of taking Effexor(especially) and paxil
n zolif (however u spell it) I have gained weight slightly
with the other twos but completely blew up with effexor
Even my doctor was shocked at my considerable weight gain
in 3 months after she last saw me (i had been on effexor
for a few months before this, saw her for stomach pains
and went back 3 months later for a check up) i have strech marks
on my thighs, my cheeks have puffed up and I'm really
scared... I have had a horrible weight imagie of
myself, but was surpassing it, when i noticed the major
weight gain in that time with the doctor.. So this
is really painful for me to look in the mirror even
thou i am more social.. I dont know what to do..
i dont want to get bigger, but i dont know if i should
quite.. Is there anyone out there that has had
weight gain with this anti depressent? i know that
paxil has caused reported weight gain but i havent
heard to much with this drug.. please email me at babyboyy@hotmail.com
if u also have had this weight issue.. thank upaul

Paul,
I gained 40 Lbs on Effexor in 3 months!!!!! I was stunned and shocked and disheartened... Effexor was added as an adjunct to the other drugs I take and really never helped me. I was in sort of a disconnected depressive haze, and didn't realize just how much I put on until I saw a new Doctor just last week. He immediately had me taper off the Effexor- I have already gained so much weight from the Celexa, I did NOT need another 40lbs!
Is the drug helping you enough to justify staying on it?
-Good Luck!!

> It has in little ways, but i truly believe that most of my gain through depression was based on me. I forced myself to go to school, slipped a bit out of my shell, made friends, before i even started the medicine.. The medicine has given me slight pushes, but nothing that i would be like,'wow this is the shit, that helped me completely'. I've gained about the same amount of weight too shelly.. I think i want to go off, but i'm scared that the damage is done already, that the weight will stay on now.. i appricate ur imput, thank u shelly
Thanks, paul

Shelley, Our stories sound very similar. I gained 30 lbs on Celexa and switched to Effexor. Well now i've gained 15 more in 2 months! Now that you've weened off the Effexor, what are you going to do? I'm on 225 mg XR. I don't know what else to try...Paxil, Wellbutrin, and Serzone are out- already tried them. I am so sick of this weight gain. My depression has gotten alot better, but i'm so disgusted with the weight gain. What are you going to do?
Thanks, LD

Hi, I have just started my first perscription ever for AD. I was given a choice of Paxil or Effexor XR. I didn't know the difference- if any, so I chose Effexor. (the Dr said the only difference is the drug mfgr) I am already 40lbs overweight and reading these boards are making me extremely nervous! Can anyone tell me (in layman's terms) the differences between these drugs and what would you suggest as far as preventing weight gain- even better... enducing some weight loss.
Thank You

Paxil is notorious for weight gain, so given the choice btw that and Effexor, you'll probably have more luck in the weight department with Effexor. Everyone is different. Lots of people actually lose weight on Effexor/other SSRIs. How much Effexor are you planning to take? I think above 225mg it starts to act on norepinephrine as well as serotonin. Paxil is just an SSRI. Good luck.

I am on 75/mg per day to start. Barley slept a wink last night! excuse my ignorance but what does SSRI stand for and can you explain your comment on acting as a norepinphrine/serotonin? Thank you for responding.

Hi Paul,
Same thing happened to me. Tried the Effexor off and on again and again.
See my comments on EFFEXOR TOPOMAX COMBO. This was my last attempt with Effexor and it didn't work.
Finally, I quit with only the topomax at night.
Soon I'm quitting this and plan on being drug free
as long as possible. I think my body is talking
to me about all this poison.
I really can identify with you and have tried so hard to work with this Effexor, but this stuff is toxic to my system.Good Luck!
