To all,
Please don't shoot the messenger.
In 1995, the FDA was forced to reveal, under the Freedom of Information Act, 92 symptoms caused by aspartame. Change in Mood Quality or Level is No. 3. The other top 10 are headache, dizziness, vomiting and nausea, abdominal pain and cramps, change in vision, diarrhea, seizures and convulsions, memory loss, fatigue.
If the shoe fits, please go to www.dorway.com for a library of information about this poisonous chemical. dorway.com is totally funded privately by a former aspartame victim who says, "he is giving back to the world" because his life was saved after doctors had misdiagnosed him for 15 years.
At http://aspartamekills.com, there is a Guestbook with experiences of people who stopped using aspartame and got well--as in no more joint pain, no more depression.
Sexual desire returns, too. On dorway, you can read Dr. Jim Bowen's paper on aspartame and impotence.
I have written articles and appeared on TV as a consumer activist fighting for removal from the market of this lethal artificial sweetener. I call the approval of NutraSweet, "The Crime of the Century."
Thanks for reading the post. My sincerest hope for everyone's physical and mental health and happiness.

Dear Carol,
Absolutely right - it's poison. I had a friend who suffered seizures because of it and know lots of people (myself included) whose migraine headaches are triggered by it - most times within 30 seconds of injestion! It is not allowed, in any form, in my home. Luckily, my husband agrees.
Parents beware: It is used now as the sweetener of choice in many children's chewable vitamins. If it says "no sugar," guess what you'll most likely find listed in the ingredients. Same goes for sugar free hot cocoa, etc., etc.
I read a really scary report about the dangers of Aspertame about eight years ago. I cannot believe it is still on the market.
Keep up the fight, Carol. God only knows the long term effect of just moderate use.

Wow! this is really interesting . I have often wondered if I was suffering from IBS (irritable bowel syndrome) I had no idea that aspartame could cause the same symptoms. I willhave to run a test and see if my symptoms disapear if I stop using it ( I usually drink a diet coke every morning) I am relieved to know that saccharine (sp?) has been given the green light as far as some products go. I have a son who is type1 diabetic so we look for these products. Also there is a new sweetener out I have heard of called Stevia. Do you have any info on this? Thanks for the insight,Cynthia

Hi ladies,
I was thrilled to hear from you. Cynthia--what a fix--a diet Coke every morning. A little shot of wood alcohol to start the day. Not bad if it didn't turn into formaldehyde. Formaldehyde poisoning definitely irritates the bowels as you will see when you stop in 60 days or less. You gotta go to http://aspartamekill.com
Is it possible aspartame is the cause of your sons diabetes? Do not give him another drop. Sugar-free gum is the worst. Goes straight to the brain. It has been proven aspartame causes brain tumors. Even 60 Minutes did a piece about it.
The detox can be uncomfortable if you and your son are using it. I have letters from mothers of children who traced thier children's seizures to Children's Tylenol and Pedialyte.
Stevia is safe and natural.. The FDA seeks to destroy its marketing and sale. Tried to burn some Stevia cookbooks from the Stevita Co. but the press got wind.
If you have any questions about your son's diabetes and aspartame, I'm going to give you Betty Martini's e-mail address. She is in consultation with Dr. H.J. Roberts the foremost aspartame expert and endocrinologist (diabetic specialist) in the world. Bettym19@mindspring.com Tell her I found you on a psycho-babble forum or you can write to me.

Thank you for all of your information. I definitely think this is worth looking into. I have never heard of aspartame causing diabetes. My son did not start using it until after he was dx, in 1994. I have no way of knowing what is the cause , except for the fact that we have a very strong family hx of autoimmune disease ( not necessarily diabetes) . I will take your advice and e-mailBetty Martini and see if she can enlighten me further. Thanks again for the great info. this is really a conspiracy isn't it?-Cynthia

I would not call this a poison, as aspartame
is an essencial amino acid, phenylalanine. My question is how big a dose does a diet coke contain. Poisons are never essencial for biological life.james

> jamesJames-I have reviewed the information brought forth regarding aspartame. I cannot honestly say that I am convinced. I think that you could probably substitute any form of essential vitamin or mineral and it would all sound the same. I am not one to be easily convinced of 'government plots' and I am really fairly relaxed about my crusades.I am sure that the matter of my son's diabetes is a direct result of having a strong family hx of autoimmune disorders. I am not opposed to trying alternatives but I am certain that if aspartame were causing all of the problems it is attributed to, then we would all be horribly ill as would most of the world's diabetics. I am not one to 'use' most 'harmful substances: no coffee , no tea, no smoking , no alcohol...... I am going to allow myself one guilty habit..... This allows me an outlet for my cravings and an insight into successful dieting. I am not sure where you are coming from, could you elaborate, St. James?

James here.....
Aspartame is mostly Phenylalanine, one of the amino acids which the body cannot manufacture itself, but must acquire from food. It is abundant in meats and cheese. Phenylalanine is a precursor of tyrosine, and together they lead to the formation of thyroxine or thyroid hormone, and of epinephrine and norepinephrine which is converted into a neurotransmitter. (Phenylalanine comes in two forms which are mirror images of each other: L-phenylalanine which has a nutritional value, and D-phenylalanine which has painkilling and depression alleviating properties which are attributed to its ability to block the breakdown of enkephalins, the brains natural pain killers. A third form, DL-phenylalanine, is a 50/50 mixture of these two forms. Phenylalanine activity is enhanced by additional Vitamin B 6, especially in studies on depression. I take DL-phenylalanine + B 6, it makes a small difference, a little tweak. Phenylalanine is used as a smart drug. The literature does report that schizophrenics should not take phenylalanine (diet coke) My guess is that some people are sensitive to a good jolt of phenylalanine + caffeine.
If Nutrasweet is really bad we would have flipper babies everywhere by now. The only point I was making is that calling it a poison is way off base, it is like calling water a poison, both are essential for life.
That said I do have some concerns about aspartame.
How much phenylalanine is in a diet coke (which I am drinking now) and what
do large doses of phenyalamine do in humans ? Diet drinks also make you
hungry. Really ! I often thought this might be the case but dismissed it. No
way ! Way. It seems your taste buds only know sweet, not sugar or
Nutrasweet. You taste sweet (sugar or not) and your body makes insulin. You
have not taken in sugar so the insulin has nothing to do but make you hungry. You crave things
that are never good for you. Little Debbie products and Diet Coke are made by Satan ! So the calories
saved in drinking diet products is lost to cravings.Peace and love from the high desert of northern New Mexico,

St. James- thanks for the great info. I was interested in the correlation between hunger and aspartame. When I was on Topomax I was unable to drink any carbonated beverages, ( caused a burning taste! ) I only drank water. I have since dc'd the topomax and have resumed the Diet Coke habit. As a result I have been noticing a definite increase in carbo cravings..... And don't get me started on Little Debbies . I have agreed with the saying that if we are what we eat then I am fast, cheap and easy. :)...... thanks again, I appreciate your insight.- Cynthia

> Aspartame is mostly Phenylalanine, one of the amino acids which the body cannot manufacture itself, but must acquire from food. It is abundant in meats and cheese.
Phenylalanine (50% of aspartame) is one of 22 amino acids that occur naturally in some protein foods. Phenylalanine must be accompanied by the other 21 amino acids to metabolize properly. When it is alone, it floods the brain and causes the serotonin necessary for emotional health to lower and from this comes seizures, depression, rage, anxiety, suicidal thoughts. This is well documented. In the early 70's Dr. Waisman fed 7infant Rhesus monkeys phenylalanine and milk. One died and the other 6 had grand mal seizures. When the phenylalanine stopped, so did the seizures.
> If Nutrasweet is really bad we would have flipper babies everywhere by now.We do have flipper babies with seizures ADD and autism The teratogenic experiments with aspartame were disastrous. One FDA scientist said it was a 'whitewash.'

As I explained the phenylalanine is aspartame is an isolate--as is the methanol (10%) wood alcohol in aspartame. Now we have 11 years old children with cirrhosis of the liver. Flipper, yes?

I've been to the "Aspartame Kills" and "Mission Possible" web sites. I found those web sites when I searched the internet trying to find out why I craved Diet Coke so intensely. Many years ago, I smoked 3 packs of cigarettes a day and quit cold turkey with no problems, however, I've been trying for the past 6 years to give up Diet Coke with limited success. I don't know what the truth is but I know something that creates addiction can't be good for you. As of today, I am 2 weeks aspartame free. I think I deserve an AA chip.
