CarolAnn,

South-central Pa. It's nice & quiet here. The beaches
in Md & NJ are only a few hrs away. Washington DC
is 1.5 hrs. I've lived in Rhode Island and Georgia.

Someday I'm moving to Montana, near Glacier Nat'l
Park.

Rochester, NY

I was lying earlier in another thread. There are more than 4 people living here. It's actually quite nice. 85 today, tulips, green, all the trees are blooming, pollen...I never had allergies till I moved here.

Rochester is on Lake Ontario, which keeps things more temperate, although thanks to winter lake effect, we had more than 100 inches of snow this season. This is the second year in a row that we beat Syracuse and Buffalo in the snow derby. (Yes, we compete to see who gets the most snow. What else is there to do?)

Like those in the Pacific Northwest, people here also have a tendency to rust, but not as much as our cars. Everybody here has a new-ish car because the excessive salt on the roads in winter turns the roads white, sending our vehicles to an early grave. Detroit must love us. Rust never sleeps.

Kathie - Drove through Wetaskiwin last fall on my way to presentation in Camrose, to the psych nurses. I grew up in Red Deer and my wife is from Calgary, so we kinda pass by you on our way south at least once a month - Cam

BTW - When did they get electricity in Wetaskiwin to power your computer? - C.

The Honey and Wine festival is tomorrow here in Livermore, wish you could be here for it. It's always a lot of fun.

I think we really wanted to follow Mark McGwire from Oakland but took a slight detour. I miss the bay area, have family in San Jose, Livermore, and in beautiful Humboldt County.

We live in Perth, which is the capital city of Western Australia...its a lovely place with terrific weather although summer gets pretty darn hot - can get up to 45c on a bad day. We live about 15km north of the city - about 5km from the beach.

Any other Aussies at babble? - I don't know if Alison still checks in? Hi Alison!

Best wishes to everyone
Deb.

Born in Northwestern Indiana; Southeast suburb of Chicago at age ten, Northwest Illinois for a couple of years after college, ten years in the Carolinas, (JudithC, I lived in Wilmington, NC for three years from 1989 to 1992. I loved it there! Wrightsville Beach, both my kids won great prizes for kids' art contests at the Azalea Festival {I guess their scribbles were less scribbley than other toddlers' and preschoolers'!),Children's Community Preschool, the weather, the historic district, low property taxes, etc. I hope you are enjoying it. I sure miss all the azaleas. I have one sick looking by my porch. I lived in Rockford, Illinois after the Carolina's. Now I'm in a Western suburb of Chicago. Anyone know any good pdocs here? I won't drive into Chicago for one. I mean suburbs. Leighwit mentioned one time that she lives in Naperville, Illinois. Perhaps she could help me out with this. I have Rush-Prudential
insurance. Unfortunately it's an HMO. I have to go to a pdoc recommended by Magellian (sp?)Behavioral Services.

I'm in a north Suburb of Chicago - next to Lake Michigan - where it's 10 degrees warmer in the winter and 10 degrees cooler in the summer than a few blocks away from the lake. Lot's of lake effect snow too.

Chicago's a great place for just about everything except for the flat geography and cold - then humid weather. I'm a native Northern Californian and when I retire I'm definitely moving back to the wine country - maybe Sonoma, or even just north of Mendicino on the coast. Wow, can't wait. Just a few more years to go...

All the best. (It's fun getting to know something else about the all of you in some way or another -even if only about demographics!)

Cam, Electricity

Cam,

Here in the sticks of rural Alberta, we have had electricity nie on 50 years. Yep, its tough to believe I know. I actually grew up in Victoria BC and moved to Alberta in 76...to Edmonton....then to Wetaskiwin in 77...that was a shock! And yet here I am...20 some years later, still here. My brother moved away from Wetaskiwin about 5 years ago and he is planning to be back here before September! My sister grew up in BC with my mother and she moved here in 88 and is still here!! Guess we like our little rural community...with electricity and all!!!

-----------------------------------------

Dallas, Texas--born and bred. I detest this place. The climate is atrocious; the only season that is tolerable is fall--all 4-5 days of it. And then, only if you don't have allergies; Dallas is the allergy capital of the US--maybe the world. Dallasites have always seemed alien to me; for me, they remain models of conspicuous consumption in a totally man-made environment.

I miss the West Coast. Altho I lived in Houston, Boston (Cambridge), and New York City when I was younger, my best memories are from the 10 years I lived in Rustic Canyon when my children were little. Rustic Canyon is a tiny coastal niche tucked between Santa Monica and Pacific Palisades in Los Angeles. It has the only wet-all-year stream and the only redwood trees in southern California. We lived in a modest, mostly glass house on a hillside pad in a grove of eucalyptus trees. We had no need for air conditioning, window coverings or screens. In the summer all manner of wildlife would come down from nearby mountains to the stream to drink; my kids could climb in it and walk to the beach. Unfortunately, my old neighbor says that LA is no longer remotely liveable, my former house recently sold for 1.5 mil and she is ready to cash out and join the californication of Seattle.

I brought my kids back to Dallas when they were school age because my depression worsened and I had the vain hope that my family could be an emotional backup. I remain here because both my kids are still in Texas (1 in Houston, 1 in Dallas).

Depressed and Dissatisfied in Dallas--medlib

I've moved 11 times in the last 18 years and I found that I can live anywhere (even Oklahoma with the red dirt) because I have made FRIENDS everywhere I've gone and that made it fine.

Now, I live in the gold country of California, about 2 hours east of San Francisco and 1 hour south of Sacramento.

Sounds like Stockton. I live in S.D. where the sun shines a zillion days a year and my garden is fantastic. Best roses anywhere. Californian's are mentally ill, too! Know why, cause most of them are transplants! (that was a joke!).
