I started Effexor XR 3 1/2 weeks ago....help!!!!!

Posted by Patty on April 18, 2000, at 22:02:57

Hi there,

I need some insight.... had severe depression starting in October and was on 200 mgs Zoloft.. brought down to 150 mgs. My doctor has now put me on Effexor XR I am up to 75 mgs a day.
I am very anxious.. and my body has withdrawl immediately when I have missed my pill by even 1 1/2 hour. Is this normal? I don't
have problems with weight gain.. in fact am down to 99 lbs.... and can't afford to lose more. I am also taking Dezyrel and am being slowly taken
off ativan. Although I have good days... I still have fatigue and am irritable. I seem to be racing everywhere..
I have had 3 fainting spells all in the same day... but nothing since. Just a feeling of tenseness. HELP!!!
any ideas??????
Thanks

>Cindy,

Thanks for your input. I am seeing my dr. tomorrow and plan to
bring up these issues. You said these feelings
disappear after awhile? I sure hope so because I
feel more stress than usual with Effexor XR. Did
you have the feelings of almost like withdrawl if you were late
taking a pill? It is a very physical feeling...
My body is definately feeling withdrawl of some
kind... and because I have to eat before the pill..
the panic and anxiety lasts atleast for 1 hour
after taking the pill. I haven't had depression
before so this is all new to me. Apparently this
has been coming for over 5 years.. keeping everything
in till the damn broke. I keep saying 1 day at a time.
It was hard for me.. I was hospitalized for 42 days
and am still not back at work. I am trying to
deal with people who think I am milking my insurance
to people who tell me to pull myself together.
Have been in Therapy and have finally found a good
therapist who is working slowly to get me thru all
this. Thanks so much for your support. It is
good to be able to not feel alone in all this.
Easy for people to say stop the pills...but they
aren't where I am. Atleast here I am talking with
people who know where I am. For the first time
I don't feel so alone.. and lost. Thanks Again

Patty, Hang in there! I hope the Effexor-XR works for you (it sure helped me!). It did take a couple of weeks before I felt better, and I still felt weird sometimes until I stayed at the same dose for a while (375 mg/day now). Depression is such hell, I wish there were a sure-fire "cure" for it (although it has certainly motivated a lot of artists and writers etc!). Keep talking to your pdoc about your symptoms too and give it a good trial (I try to give each med at least a month...and have tried Prozac, Serzone, Luvox, Zoloft, Tofranil, Ludiomil, and Sinequan, in the past...only Serzone and Effexor-XR have really helped me with depression, and unfortunately Serzone doesn't address OCD. After about 4 l/2 months on Effexor-XR now, I think it may be just what I needed, and have my fingers crossed! Take care, and best wishes to you!
