off the mood stabilizer and scared

Posted by Amanda S on April 4, 2000, at 20:17:54

am off the lamictal for awhile to see if it has been causing my hairloss and will be going to Mexico for a week. I am scared I will get angry and resentful again towards my husband and kids. I have klonopin for safety. I am at the end of my rope on mood stabilizers. Beginning to wonder if all of them will cause my hair to thin. Going to see a new psychiatrist at a teaching hospital here in SC. Hopefully he/she will have an answer.

Amanda - I'm so sorry that I don't have any answers for you. I hope you will enjoy your trip and perhaps hold onto the notion that one of these up-and-comers at the teaching hospital will have a new trick in their bag of potions. If you start to get angry with the hubby or kids, do the count-to ten thing or the self talk, as well as the clonazepam. It may help. Good luck and I will be thinking of you. Keep us posted on your progress. - Cam W.

Hi Amanda,

Scared is okay, you know. Just don't let it drive you to obsess about it. You probably will have set-backs. You probably will get angry at your husband and/or your kids

... who knows, they may even deserve it once in a while ;^).

But don't grasp so hard for control that you lose it. Don't let it turn into a feedback loop that'll keep you spinning ... like Cam said, whatever it takes from counting to ten or, my personal favorite, repeating over and over to yourself the phrase "I, Amanda S----, have a Cheerful and Sunny Disposition" until you mean it (otherwise known as the Blow Sunshine Up Your Butt technique, which I, myself, have perfected).

Well, except that I don't say the "Amanda S----" part since that isn't my name.

Go have fun in Mexico, and catch a good tan for me -- half Celtic, half Slavic ... all I do is fry.

cheers,
bob
