OK.. I thought I'd posted last night.. but obviously not!!
I've posted a few times on here, and being in the UK, I know some of our drug names are differen t. I don't know what Zispin might be called over in the US, so please bear with me.
Anyway, been on Paxil since November, and since the new year, I ahve been feeling increasingly worse and worse. It finally came to a head two week ago, when work confronted me about my absences and time keeping. I explained everything to my boss, who sent me to the company doctor - who was great, and suggested tryinga different meds.
I saw my own doctor yesteday (on a general practitioner) who gareed, and has given me Zispin (30mg of Mirtazapine is it's actual thing). She said to have 3 days clear of drugs, before starting to Zispin. It's now been about 60 hours since my last Paxil (30mg) and I feel terrible. I have very bad dizziness (head spinning when ever I move), feel nauseaus, and can't think straight at all. I didn't make it into work at all today. It's still 24 hours till I can take a Zispin, but can't feel like this all weekend (I can ahrdly string a normal sentance together verbally).
Is this from coming over the Paxil so suddenly - and is this really what should ahve been reccomended??
And does anyone know anything about thr Zispin??
Thanks
Nikki xx

According to www.biopsychiatry.com, Zispin = Remeron = Mirtazapine

How about it, Remeron folk? Did she really need a wash-out period to switch from Paxil to Remeron?
Paxil works wonders for some people, and then for others (like me) it's a nightmare. Stopping cold turkey like that was NOT a good idea, and it rarely is a good idea for ANY psychotropic medication -- unless the med is doing some serious harm to you and it's medically necessary to stop immediately.
Even when I was tapering off paxil, I went through some pretty severe withdrawal ... and that was over the course of a month.
I checked at www.mentalhealth.com and was quite surprised to see that Remeron/Zispin/Mirtazapine was not in their list of meds. (Is it available in Canada?) Anyone got a URL for Nikki to point her towards some information on it?
Nikki, I'm sure the folk here on remeron can help you more than I can, particularly with whether you can taper slowly off the paxil while starting up the remeron. Having been through paxil withdrawal, I hope you find some relief soon ... just remember, even though you may feel awful right now you will get through it.
be well,
bob

My favorite drug info site is www.rxlist.com. Apparently, the wash-out period is needed because both drugs are metabolized in the liver by the same P450 cytochrome, DII6. Heaven knows, getting rid of Paxil is a big enough problem without adding in a substance that will delay its elimination. I believe ALL SSRI's should come with prominent warning labels re withdrawal symptoms.
BTW, there's also info on Remeron/mirtazapine in Dr. Bob's Tips section.
Good luck!

bob - Remeron's not in Canada, yet. It is being held up in Ottawa at Health Canada (FDA equivalent). I did expect it to be released about 2 years ago, so I did my research on it then. I did have it figured out, but I have forgot most of it. I have also learned much about it on threads on this board. We in Canada always seem to get everything 5 years later (I think it has to do with that thalidomide thing a few years ago). - Cam W.

I figured something like that. I really like the format of the info at mentalhealth.com, so seeing it wasn't there was a bit surprising.
Medlib, thanks for the tip on rxlist.com!
Nikki -- whatever else the sites recommended by medlib might say, hang in there. Three days may seem like an eternity, but it is a fairly short wash-out period. When I was coming off of paxil, my pdoc started me on wellbutrin once the withdrawal took hold ... it managed the withdrawal symptoms fairly well for me. I hope the remeron brings you the same relief!
cheers,
bob

I have been on paxil now for over 8 years and it's time for me to come off of it. After coming to this site and reading all the negitive stuff about it, I'm getting a bit concerned. I have started now to drop my dosage to half of what I was taking and can already feel the effects of it, withdraws. It's ugly and don't like it. Can anyone offer any help to what I need to do to get off paxil? Is there another medicine that I can take to help with the withdraws? Please reply....
