the "non-weight-gaining" antidepressant. anyone else

Jenna - Any antidepressant can cause weight gain. It may not be a side effect of the antidepressant, but a sign that your depressive symptoms are resolving. Many people with major depressive disorder do not feel like eating and must force themselves. Once the depression begins to resolve it becomes easier to force yourself to eat, hence the weight gain. Sometimes its seems that antidepressants can directly cause weight gain, but the mechanism is poorly understood (may have to do with leptin or other hormonal levels). It's the same old story; eat a good diet, with few junk or fast foods; snack on veggies; and exercise regularily (join a group if motivation is a problem). Hope this helps - Cam W.

unfort it is really not that. i have not felt
depressed for about 8 months now (record!)and
have eaten the exact same foods during that time
period. i was on prozac until december, then
switched to celexa to see if it helped with the
horrible sexual dysfunction (it didn't). then i
noticed after a month or so that i had gained ten lbs.
this is while exercising at least an hour a day
and eating my normal foods! so i am going to try
to switch to effexor now.
it seems a little petty, to be all of this switching
around, but i feel like i deserve to be not
depressed, able to have an orgasm, and not
gaining weight all at the same time!!! :)

Jenna - Depression is a bitch, but most depressions are treatable and most people don't have a second bout. Also, about the switching; like my father used to say - "You gotta kiss a lot of frogs before you find your princess." Many people respond to the first antidepressant, but some people need to try 4 or 5 before finding the right one. One thing you can tell yourself is that your feeling like this won't be forever. The time will pass, but its hard to comprehend when you are in the middle it. Good luck and keep plugging away. I'll be happy to try to answer any further questions that may arise. - Cam W.

Jenna,
There's nothing petty about anything you've said here. Let's face it: ten pounds on a guy isn't the same change as ten pounds on most women. It feels like more to us.
I noticed weight change on Celexa last year, and I'd forgotten about it until you mentioned it here. I was considering taking it again, as an adjunct to Wellbutrin. I'm going to reconsider, now that I recall the weight gain.
I don't think it's unreasonable to list and priortize those side effects which cause us the most distress and to try to avoid them if at all possible. Sure, we'd all choose relief from depression as our first priority. But that doesn't mean that we can't priortize and force-rank other considerations.

WoW, well said jenna. Glad to see theres more women these days that put happiness in front of looks. I'm a guy and if I dont look good I dont feel good. Guess u can call it a mixture of eating disorder and depression, cause not a damn day goes by where if I pig out I dont get depressed. But If you think about it boy or girl if your depressed and just dont want to move on cause of being overweight theres obviously something wrong going on in the brain and all u can do is struggle and fight.
Happiness to all

thanks for your response, leighwit. it is funny,
my psychdoc was fairly reluctant to switch me from
the celexa. she was like, 'you're doing so well,
not sure if we should change it' and i basically
really pushed her until she agreed. and i think
she is a competent, smart, funny doc, she just
didn't seem to get it that it was not OKAY with me
to have a total inability to have an orgasm and to
gain weight unexpectedly.

Priorities are priorities! I'm so glad I changed, too, because the Effexor-XR has shown me what it must feel like to be "normal."--Cindy W

I gained 20 LBS with in 2 months of taking Effexor--I had not changed my eating habits and continued to run or bike 60 min. a day. I have been off of it for about 2.5 weeks and have lost 7 lbs. I feel must less puffy. I have read that 1 out of 12 will gain weight and feel that this should be explained to the person receiving Effexor.
This is the end of the thread.
