Malingering?

Posted by Mark C. on February 14, 2000, at 23:04:18

I would just like to know what kind of experiences depressed people have had with individuals (e.g. friends, family, neighbors, et al) who engage in behaviors such as uttering remarks that suggest malingering on the part of the depressed person, making medical diagnoses and/or giving medical advice.

Mark, I don't have the energy to tell of my experiences over the last 15 years of treatment.

I will say this. Depression will tell you who your real friends and real family are.

If you don't respect them, don't listen to them.

People like this do more harm than good (even if their intentions are good), especially if their advice is basically 'snap out of it' all dressed up in various words.

everyone has experienced having a bad day, or the blues for a bit ... so many people think they know something about depression.

I wouldn't want to listen to them.

Janice.
