Neurontin

Posted by Noa on January 30, 2000, at 18:03:55

About another friend:

She is extremely phobic about medication, but really needs to give it a try because her depression/anxiety/agitation have reached a point that they are threatening her marriage, and making it nearly impossible for her to parent her child.

Her doctor has prescribed neurontin, starting at a low dose, 100 mg twice a day. I am fairly sure that at such a low dose, she won't experience much in the way of side effects, but she asked me to check with my friends, the experts.

Also, are side effects such as tremor, dizziness, and blurred vision, initial effects that fade?

What have your experiences been?

Hi Noa,
Neurontin had very few side effects for me (certainly compared to other mood stabilizers). I had dissociative experiences at 1500mgs/day- but @ 900 (300tid) no side effects at all. It worked well for anxiety; I hope your friend finds it helpful.

Noa,

I have been taking Neurontin for about 2 months now, my dose being 400mg 4x/day. I experienced few side effects, but the grogginess and other initial effects went away in about 1 week (my starting dose being 400mg 2x/day). The drug has done wonders for my anxiety and aggressiveness. I wish you friend the best of luck.

Is Neurontin a mood stabilizer or antidepressant?

I think it is an anticonvulsant that is used as a mood stabilizer, but has some antidepressant qualities, as well.

I spoke just now with my friend. She took her first 100mg dose of neurontin (hooray!). I gave her some encouragement, in part based on what you told me. Let's hope she hangs in there with it long enough for it to work.

I tried neurontin for the second time without much success. I took 100mg the lowest dose once a day and was so drowsy that I became agitated and restless.

Has anyone tried Neurontin to augment non-effective antidepressants for unipolar depression(chronic, atypical) and if so with what results?

My 12 year old daughter has started to take neurontin and is back on Dexedrine for ADHD and possible bi-polar. I can't tell if this is a better option than the Wellbutrin she was taking before. We want her to be able to focus in school and sleep at night. It's been a long road for us and we're wanting the right combination of drugs that will allow her to be happy and successful. Anyone out there know if this is possible??
