I spoke to my doctor and he is going to put me on Parnate after the washout period. Depending on how react to that he will decide if I need lithium. But he says I will put on weight with lithium. As I'm already overweight I'm not too happy about that. Did you put on weight with Lithium? TIA Jan

Hello Janet: Taking 900mg/lithium a day did not cause me to gain weight. From what I recall reading somewhere, the weight can be caused by drinking sodas, juices, milk etc... due to the increased thirst. What dose of lithium does your doc plan to work up to? In augmentation of antidepressants, a high dose is not necessarily needed. Also, when you start Parnate, you may not need the lithium at all, which would resolve this concern. Best wishes and blessings,

I drink a LOT of water because of the lithium, and I noticed a few weeks ago I started craving juice. I have allowed myself some juice, but am trying to resist and stick to water, because with the amount I am drinking, all that sugar would add a LOT of calories.
As for weight gain, I have not been able to tell if I can attribute my weight gain to any of my meds over the past few years. I have put on a lot of weight, but it might be attributed to how sedentary I have become and how comforting I find food. There have been periods of time when I find it hard to enjoy anything, but food is still enjoyable. So, I can't say that it is the meds. But who knows?

I was in the hospital when they put me on lithium. I was only in a week and I couldn't wear out the jeans I wore in when I was admitted.

I've been on lithium for years, and have had no weight gain, no increased appetite and no increase in thirst (other than the first month or two). Janice

Claudea: Wow, what can I say. My reference was one I read somewhere that the increased thirst was a factor (very likely that there are others) to weight gain. It's interesting how it happened. Best of luck and blessings to you.
