New to Prozac and Hopeful!

Posted by Midnight on January 24, 2000, at 20:10:49

I started taking Prozac for my depression about a week and a half ago. Starting with 10mg's, I experienced some side effects like dizziness, insomnia, and dry mouth. These have gone away mostly. But now it is time to move up to 20mg's per my Dr.. I am hopeful that this drug will help my problem, as Serzone and all that over the counter stuff didn't work. Can anyone tell me how long it takes for the Prozac to kick in? I don't feel the depression going away as of yet.

Midnight - The full effect of Prozac will take at least 4 weeks, sometimes longer. Most studies I have read on depression give a range of 3 to 8 weeks of therapy, some a couple weeks longer, before giving up on an antidepressant. Many antidepressant "treatment failures" are due to people thinking that the drug should work faster than it does. Give it another month or two and you should see some effects. Remember, everyone's body is different and every depression is different, so finding the correct antidepressant can take some time. Don't be discouraged and don't give up on a drug (eg Prozac) too soon. Good luck and hang in there. - Cam W.

Thank you Cam for filling me in. I will defiantly let this one take the time to work.
