Colds and Depression

Posted by Cass on January 19, 2000, at 19:17:44

Speaking of winter illnesses, I've come down with a bad cold. The vulnerable feeling that accompanies being ill always worsens my depression. I know everyone feels vulnerable when they're ill, but colds and flus tend to plunge me backwards into intense emotional despair. When I was a kid, my illnesses were rarely treated because of neglect, and I'm thinking that getting colds throws me into that same helpless, vulnerable state of mind again. The most dangerous thing about colds and flus is that my emotional well-being spirals downward. My doctor put me on Bactrim DS and Amantadine, and now I'm feeling very detached. What I'm going through emotionally is truly worse than what I'm experiencing physically.

I tend to get depressed when I am sick, too. I think it is likely that psychological factors and/or physical factors contribute to this. My observations of myself are that when sick, my body/brain lose energy and vitality, which can feel like depression. On top of that is the frustration I feel because I am slowed down, unable to focus, etc., because of the cold or other illness, and the subsequent tendency to interpret that as a sign of character weakness. But I really do think there is biochemical process that makes me feel depressed when ill, even if I do not make those psychological interpretations.

Hi Cass,

I'm as close to suicidal as I ever get when I'm catching a flu or cold. Usually I don't even realize that I'm getting sick, I just think my life is discusting, has always been discusting and I am discusting - and wonder what the hell am I doing being alive anyway.

Fevers accompany both flus, colds and depression; and for the life of me, I can barely tell the three apart - if it weren't for sore throats and trouble keeping food down. Janice.
