What's this about GABA and social phobia?

Posted by Arthur on September 30, 1999, at 11:35:27

i've read a number of threads about "GABA" being a potentially new area for treating social phobia. have also done some research on MedLine which indicates GABA is implicated in social phobia. lastly, i've heard that neurontin (gabapentin) did not pan out and was less effective than ssri's. but . . . . i've also read that neurontin does not affect GABA directly, as some of the other GABA agonists, such as Progabide or Tiagabine? are any psychdocs successfully using GABA agonists to treat social phobia? i know the benzodiazepines can be extremely effective, as they enhance GABA, without any serotonergic effect. and, i'm afraid it's the serotonergic effect which causes sexual dysfunction, which i, understandably, want to avoid.

would appreciate hearing about any of your experiences?
