Does anyone have more information on SAMe? I have been to the Mothernature website and read the excerpt from Dr. Richard Brown's book. I even went to Barnes and Noble to peruse the book some more. It sounds pretty promising, but expensive. I have not seen it for less than $1.00 a pill, and the doses recommended for severe depression make it almost prohibitive. I just bought a bottle for my daughter who has been on most of the SSRI's and some tricyclics without any success. The only relief she every received was when she started adderal -- but that probably was just the initial rush because it soon wore off. She is completely off adderal now because of her concern about its addictive properties and because it wasn't helping. Currently she is on paxil and buspar. Does anyone know if she can take 400 to 800 mgs. of SAMe while on these other ADs?
Thanks in advance for any information anyone can provide.

I believe JohnL and others have noted the efficiacy of the combo in other threads while also deploring the cost...the psychopharms. & pseudopharms are just another curse of this beast-ly condition of shattered psyches...& sometimes they help...

At 40 bucks for 20 pills, no, it's not worth it.
Besides, the stuff doesn't work anyway.
If someone told you that cow piss would relieve your depression,
would you drink it?
None of that natural crap works.
Get real!

> Thanks in advance for any information anyone can provide.Yes it can be taken with Paxil/Buspar. As with everything else, start with low doses and work up. Nature Made brand (Wal*Mart, Mothernature.com) has good instructions for use in the package. Is it worth it? We're all different. A miracle to one is a nightmare to another. Only you can tell. There have been tons of clinical studies on SAMe and has been used for years in other countries, which is encouraging. I find it most useful in allowing a lower dose of a precrip AD. I need 1200mg ($6) a day or more, and that to me is too expensive because it's been helpful, but alas, no miracle.

You can buy it 60 pills (200mg Mother Nature) at BJ Wholesale club or Costco. I suspect its priced the same at most of the giant retail outlets. Walmart had it 20 pils for 20$. I wouldn't even order it off the web, because shipping costs make it cost more than the $1 a pill you can get it locally.
As far as it working, I'm with JohnL. I working up to 6 pills a day ($4.50 a day), and I still don't think its enough. But I have major depression. I suspect it could really work great for mild or moderate. And it really doesn't have any side effects. And make sure you talk to your doctor first.

Tom,
Are you taking it by itself or with an AD?

I do take Xanax (.5mg per day) though. I've had almost little to no success with ADs. My current Pdoc has prescribed desimpramine (I've tried all the newer meds, and I do mean all of them), and I've filled it, but there it sits on my shelf. I've had the most success with SAMe, but its still not nearly enough. I debate every day about adding the desimpramine. But for now I'm in a holding pattern.

I have been thinking about adding SAMe with effexor. While researching SAMe I came across WWW.natureRX Ther prices seemed the most reasonable. However, they said they won't be able to fill ordewrs until Oct.

I work at a Point-of-Purchase. I've only seen one bottle of SAM-e come back for refund. We will refund with only a few pills left, so if it wasn't working ya'd think it would come back more often.
We are told by corporate to tell people not to take it with Prozac.
Several Dr.s (non-psych) have sent people in with split perscriptions to boost something else, I'd think you'd want to talk it over with your provider.
The one refund had a bad reaction. Same as with St. John's and Prozac -- if you've had a serious head trauma in the past any seretonin booster can cause migraines.
I have seen a lot of very depressed people do the 90 day cycle and come off, a few went right back on.
