Do I need to ween off Wellbutrin??

Posted by LD on September 13, 1999, at 15:20:28

Here I go again, I am going off Wellbutrin and starting Celexa. Does anyone know if there are withdrawel effects from stopping Wellbutrin?
I know there are with many ADs but I've never seen too much info in this respect regarding Wellbutrin. I have already in the past week taken myself down to 200 mg/day due to anxiety.
My doctor said I could just take 100 mg/day of Wellbutrin the next day as well as start the Celexa at the same time. I am alittle skeptical to quit the Wellbutrin this fast.

Any advice? Thanks!

as you probably found out you need to ween off the wellbutrin and into the celexa. When I did it I over laped the two for about a month. Curiosity askes what are you on now?

A few years ago, I had a convulsive siezure from taking Wellbutrin.
Hence, I immediately ceased taking Wellbutrin, going from a very high dose,
to none whatsoever with no gradual withdrawal period whatsoever.
I suffered no withdrawal problems whatsoever.

Hi,
I have just come over from the Effexor threads, I have been on both and have almost weaned off of Effexor, the big nightmare. My doctor said there are "NO" side effects to the Wellbutrin wothdrawal. It doesn't seem there are many threads on this drug, or am I missing something? As soon as I finish the Effexor withdrawal I am go for the Wellbutrin withdrawal. I only take 100 mg per day and sometimes I pop another for energy. I haven't felt any difference (bad) when I do it. But probably shouldn't. The Effexor withdrawal just makes me so tired. Any advice is welcome and what kind of side effects can I expect... if any.
Thanks, Pamela

I've been on Wellbutrin for nearly three years now, and I did stop it once to try Reboxetine. I stopped all at once and did not feel any withdrawal symptoms whatsoever (unlike Effexor withdrawal which was a nightmare for me.)

Good luck!

At the time of this posting, did you know of the withdrawal side effects of Celexa compared to Wellbutrin? May I ask why you wanted to be off Wellbutrin? Did you experience any Wellbutrin withdrawal symptoms? My doctor tried to take me from Paxil to Celexa and when I fould out that they were both SSRI's, I said no and asked for Wellbutrin instead. Paxil withdrawal is awaful!

Hi,
I just came off Wellbutrin without any problem. From a dose of 200mg Wellbutrin I cut to 100mg. for three days then stopped completely-no problem. Had the same kind of experience with Prozac (although different dose). I can appreciate your concern if you have been through the Paxil *withdrawal*. Prozac "substitution" seems to be a good way to get off SSRIs. I see no problem with your doc's change from Wellbutrin to Celexa (only my opinion). I am Bipolar II and taking 1500mg of Depakote, only, at this time.
Very best of Luck

Wellbutrin didn't do much for me. Some think it wonderful though & I'm sure it is if it works. Like all meds, the way they effect people can be so individual.

I, too, took Paxil for a long time (a few years) & wanted off it. It worked wonderfully really but I hated the fact that if I was even late with the dose, the discontinuation effects would start. It was a nightmare coming off it. I've posted other comments about its withdrawal.

I've tried going without any ADs three separate times, giving it a good chance without. I've now realised my brain needs something. I'm so bleak, dark, & angry without - not my real personality at all. I chose Celexa & asked my doctor for a prescription.

He respects me a great deal & knows that I educate myself well on drugs. We've sat & discussed languages, calculus, etc so he knows I'm not a dummy & will listen to my requests to try different meds (except for benzos & stims - he's convinced that they're not good). So now I'm on Celexa - no side-effects for me, works very well, & if I miss a dose or am late, no weird withdrawal effects either. I've also added adrafinil from overseas & will inform my doctor of this the next time I go in.

Hope my experiences may give you some ideas.
