I don't know how to get in with another croud. Drugs and alcohol is what I did for so many years, 10 to be exact. How do you just change?

Well, it IS an adjustment. Do you have any friends you don't usually drink/use with? If so you can start spending more time with them, and less with the others. Or if you really really want to find some sober folks to hang out with, there's always AA/NA.

Its been a long time since I have abused anything. I've broken all ties with old friends. And thats the problem, I have no friends. For 2 years now I just stay at home and watch TV for fun.

I understand it well Seb~I used to do a lot of stuff to fit in~low self-esteem I guess. Lately since isolating pretty much I haven't put myself in situations where I've forced myself to drink too much or smoke too much pot, just to fit in. Thinking about it though, man, I feel like I could use a joint about now *cringes* Seriously!!
Anyway, I hear ya! Do I understand? Hmmmmmm Could it be that we just wanna have fun with our buddies or we don't wanna 'feel'? or we just like the 'stuff'?
What do ya think? For me, prolly all of the above.> Anyone understand this? Go out and party, force yourself to use too much just to fit in. Eventualy this becomes you!

Change doesn't happen overnight. I hear the saying 'If you keep doing the same thing over and over you'll always get what you've always got' So, if you did 'it' for 10 years, it may take 10 years to recover~hopefully not, probably not. I like what Tab asked, do you have any friends you don't usually drink/use with? If so you can start spending more time with them, and less with the others, sometimes you have to cut people off who aren't good for you when you want to change~to save your own sanity. I know it's easier said than done. I think Tab also brought up a great comment about AA/NA.
You can do it, if you really want to Seb!> I don't know how to get in with another croud. Drugs and alcohol is what I did for so many years, 10 to be exact. How do you just change?

Only place I go where there are no drugs, etc. The gym! 1 hour a day, I haven't been able to make any real freinds there, but it is fun and I don't have to worry about getting messed up.
I guess my problem is how do you relate to people without the drugs? What do you do for fun anymore? Lately I have been resourting to things I did befor the drug, gym, TV. I need more people to be around but I'm afraid I won't fit in.

Glad you like the gym and yeah, you don't have to worry about getting messed up there and you get a work out! TV is cool, you learn a lot~Iknow I do! LOL
Only you can find ways to relate to people without drugs. There are many places to go where people don't use drugs.
Do you mean you feel better, or have more courage in relating to people if you're using? I think everyone feels, at times, they won't fit in, but if you just be you, be real, that's all you can do and if people don't like that then they aren't worth it.
You think?

Seb and Galkeep, you 2 need to exchange phone #,s and quit tying up the board!!!(yea,I,m just kiddin around!)But,seriously folks, there is a wonderful realization to this "circle of life".Look at it in the frame of a Timeline.Imagine you are 9-12 years old. What do you do with your pals? You go out, hike in the woods, explore neat places, play all kinds of ball, all day long,go in at dark, take a warm shower and go to bed feeling like you could sleep like a dream.Go ahead 8 years. What do you do with your pals? You go to the one,s house who just got a bag of killer weed and hole up tokin and jammin on ear-splittin rock stuff till your head feels like a balloon with too much air in it.Then, you muster up the strength and spare change to go to the store and score a few bottles of MD20/20 or some Boone,s Farm Appleberry wine, then you all go down to the abandoned lot and swig, smoke cigs and roaches, then go to some party somebody told you about and there,s a few pills floatin around, you score a few, take a few, then at some point, you find your way home after stoppin by a bush or 2 to finish pukin,go home and fall in the bed with the room spinning around and around and somewhere you settle into a dark coma-like sleep, shattered by nightmares and night sweats, get up the next day and recuperate till evening so you can do it all again.(Stay with me,guys,it starts to get better).Lets span ahead,10 more years.Hopefully,common-sense coupled with a new-found sense of self-respect and responsibility has taken hold by now and you,ve managed to finish your education, work a job you really enjoy, then at 5:00,what do you do with your pals? You meet at the"Y",kid around a bit about the deal you closed or the contract you got goin, you all put on your old shorts and tennis shoes and you go for a nice cross-country run, yep, that,s right, through the woods, exploring a few of the old paths to see where they go,kid each other about how a bunch of ugly guys like yourselves ended up with such beautiful, loving wives,attractive,well-mannered kids, you go back to the facility and play all kinds of ball, then you get home at dark, take a warm shower, then kiss your kids and congradulate them on the"A,s" they got on their report cards, sit down and eat a dinner fit for a king, while you make the plans for going with the kids to the campground this weekend, discussing the details with that stunning wife you still can,t believe is yours. You go to bed, feling like you could sleep like a dream, only thing different is,unlike long ago, man, you,re Living a dream!Nice thing bout all dis:it can REALLY be this way.....if you REALLY want it.Festus

I got into rehab this year to get off the drugs, because not only could I not just change friends, I couldn't quit the drugs. I went through the program and now I regularly attend (daily) AA and NA meetings. Now I have *only* sober friends who are former drug/alcohol users, so at least it's easy to relate just by the history. AA can be a lot of fun if you let it -- people wouldn't keep coming back for 30 years if it was a complete bore! (I originally thought AA was for losers who couldn't manage their drinking... Then when I tried, I found I couldn't stop drinking and using, so I needed their help!)

The lucky few that are able to weave the twisting, turning Highway of Life with the same pals they grew up with are getting to experience something special. The even fewer that grew up together and out of,then back into sobriety, are REALLY doing something special. So much of the time,we either move away from,or lose touch with our friends, especially when they decide to follow different "crowds"and mindsets, like getting or not getting "turned-on"by the world of drugs and alcohol. These 2 very different worlds clash amongst the best of friends.Things, like early death from OD or accidents, disputes about which person is right or wrong, and all the other stuff that goes with the territory, can spell disaster for even the best of friends.Peter, you have managed(you AND your pals)to do a rare thing:to allow the true bond of friendship to supercede the powerful ins and outs that can come from the places ya,ll have already been.Fantastic!Festus

I think you misunderstood. My friends while I was drinking and using are still using to my knowledge. The sober people I hang out with are in AA and stuff.
