Some of my favorite people happen to be left handed. And why is it that one's non-dominant hand is so limited in so many ways?
And it is strange how we just favor one side at some point when we are young, and that becomes the hand we write with. I used to try and draw with my left, sometimes came out better.

Should that have been "I wish I were left handed"?
My grammar's gone downhill.
This is a silly little thread. I need gas and it is very, very expensive. It'd be nice if I could cycle to work.
Ah well...

It will get more expensive yet. No bicycle tracks?
Mr Trump was in the papers here amusing the sub-editors no doubt and certainly me with his subtle analysis of the Libyan situation. If you ever want to talk about the excellent Trump I am all ears. I will have to cut out the article and frame it, it's that good. It is another path to follow to get some oil.

No bike trails to my job. :-(.
Another good reason to quit!! (nope, that is not going to happen)
Trump scares me. I have no idea what he has been saying.

This was the fun bit....
>Mr Trump also derided rival Republican Mitt Romney, the former Massachusetts governor and venture capitalist who is expected to run for the nomination, as "a small-business man".
>"I'm a much bigger businessman," he added. "And I have a much, much bigger net worth."
Tell me if you want the scary bit.
Don't you think he embodies the spirit of the times? I see no end to the shamelessness.
Maybe it isn't Wilhelmine Germany?
Maybe it's Weimar or the end of the Roman Empire?
I'm glad I'm not younger. My son tells me that all public transport in Park City, Utah is free. We should copy that.

Sigi, both parts are scary. That's what's happening here. We don't even need to sham intelligent conversation anymore.
I mean, what's the problem? Doesn't bigger always mean better? It's our algorithm here. Our lovely doublespeak.
I mean, look at the hair. Not his hair. Not that mean spirited and personal.
The hair. It's Hitchcockian in it's significance. Do you recall the close-ups of all his heroine's hair?(Hitchcock probably has other meanings before Alfred. I don't know. I cut my teeth on film and television.)

We get all this news (I think) because there is real anxiety about political gridlock in the US. And there are refugees from the US who then make it a subject in their various fields. I'm thinking of Chip someone or other who is the director of the Sydney Writers Festival and who made that the theme of last years festival. And I've noticed it in other papers and magazines such as the Telegraph (London, straight conservative) and the Economist (pretty free market).
When I reflect on the fortunate but complicated hand the US possessed after WWII I am more willing to feel that even interventions like Vietnam made some sense and were honourable in their intentions if not in their execution (stopping communism, stabilising France and protecting its sense of honour). Whereas now I truly wonder if attention is being paid to the world outside the US. Clearly this can't be expected from Mr Trump about whom I know only that he fires people, owns buildings, has a lot of hair and is very rich. Sort of like Elvis but without the charm and the drugs but with much more money. Decline, that's what it is.
Australians tend to be concerned because they can see it spreading here. I think. Anyway a program remarked that he had made Sarah seem like a public intellectual.
I wonder how much that hair cost? It *could* be genetic.
How do you stop being alarmed about this? Ever since I read it on Tuesday I have been in a state.

What does the gridlock look like from where you are? Gridlock is an interesting word. It implies a potential functionality.

I still imagine it as an o.k. place to raise a kid. I could be wrong. Plus, please tell me it hasn't been torn up in an industrial free for all.

>O.K. So I finally Google Trump. I'm trying to not stroke out. I mean oh. my. god. He is talking about the presidency. I completely understand your alarm. I wish I wish this was silly rubbish. But I
thought, after what Reagan did to California as governor, after listening to his debates--I even analyzed sentences because they really were gibberish while the press lauded his rhetorical talent, I thought surely no way will he be elected.
Then George Bush Jr. Sarah Palin. The tea party.California actually spent oodles of money to hold a special election to oust a very good fellow who's only problem was he could actually do math and felt some responsibility toward the state. To elect Arnold Schwarzenegger.
There was an earthquake that damaged a
small town in Southern California, and Mr Schwarzenegger toured the damage. There were also casualties. People drove hundreds of miles to this beleaguered town to take pictures of Arnold. Unbelievable. It was not about the town. At all.> Australians tend to be concerned--because they can see it spreading here. I think. Anyway a program remarked that he had made Sarah seem like a public intellectual.
Oh god.

> How do you stop being alarmed about this? Ever since I read it on Tuesday I have been in a state.Well, I just don't pay attention. Really. I live in a news blackout. See? I had no idea about this thing with Trump. Celebrity will destroy my country. If I pay attention, I am absolutely beside myself. Because even though it is absolutely ridiculous, it is absolutely real.
And when we, the US, engages in war, it is played out through real bodies, real lives. We have become incredibly invasive and engage in war without integrity or honor; hear me say that this is not what the people actually serving may believe, and that is itself tragic. Then our government has behaved disgracefully to this same service people.
O.K. I'm ranting. But sigi, it is very serious. You know.
Just putting Trump and election in a sentence. I thought he might be talking governor. He can't run. Please tell me. And how is it looking for Palin?
This is incredible news. I'm shocked. I'll have to ask my husband.
Thing is, most citizens here are very beleaguered. Inflation, such fear in the workplace about layoffs. Who has time to care?
I do wish people would unplug their t.v.(s).
I did read a writer named Chris Hedges a bit, but so, so bleak. I lack resilience right now.
Hollywood did a real mash-up of his work and called it The Hurt Locker. It won the Oscar last year or the previous.
The US seems to think war is o.k. Let's say, I feel the nation is being used and will be discarded. The real wealth is international.
I've said way too much. I'll regret this in the morning.
But, see. That's also the climate right now. I was teaching when September 11th happened. No one could speak. I mean we could, but some of those who did had their tenure challenged (I was never tenured). It was so weird. Everything really did change here.

I have no particular feelings about Donald Trump. If I ever feel he is a viable candidate for the presidency I might pay more attention to him.
But, in general, I don't make remarks about entire countries or citizens of countries on an internet bulletin board, particularly one not devoted to that sort of discussion, and one where citizens of that country are likely to be posting.
I guess I just figure that this is a mental health bulletin board. I find myself liking and enjoying people of all sorts of political persuasions. But I find it easier to like and enjoy people if we stay off topics that I might be offended by, or if those topics are discussed, if they are discussed with a fair amount of respect and recognition that others, others who might well be otherwise liked, might feel differently.
I do tend to be offended by statements about the U.S. or Americans. Well, I'm one of them you know. And we're hardly a monolith. And while I consider myself a moderate politically, and vote for members of either party with equal reluctance, I also tend to find myself having negative feelings toward vehement anti Republican party statements. Republicans aren't a monolith either. Those moderates of both parties tend to think in terms of issues, not of parties.
I just don't want to have negative feelings towards anyone on this board - particularly due to something that has nothing to do with the purpose of this board. It seems such a waste.
I like you very much, and I'm invested in maintaining those positive feelings.
And thank you for taking my comment in the spirit it was intended. I of course believe it can be used in situations other than potential gaucherie, so please don't think I was implying that.

Dinah,
Thank you very much for your respect and for your friendship.
I see now that my rant, which it was, could be read as anti-republican. I didn't realize that, so thanks for allowing me the chance to clarify. (They are all Republicans, aren't they.) I was speaking to the individual candidates. Note that I skipped Bush senior. I did not knock his competency to hold office, though I certainly didn't care for his policies. He was a superior president to my mind than his son.
Regarding the despair and outrage I do feel about the direction the US is going, I
feel that for various reasons we are in
trouble. Obama is disappointing me. I happily voted for him. I jumped to my feet and cheered when he was awarded though Nobel. Debatable as it may be, I think the conflicts our nation ingages in are not honorable in intent. The waste of lives and resources are immense. I did say this was a problem of intent and not at all one of the men and women serving.I think I explained the history of my fear
and dread reaction to Trump +president. I do not believe he is competent or broad-minded enough to handle the work. I also hold the same belief in regards to Palin. They have not, to my ear demonstrated the ability to engage in any rational discourse, the way, say, you
have.Is the Tea Party officially Republican? Well, it was not my intent to give Republicans a black eye. Gray Davis, the governor ousted by an unprecedented, underwritten campaign by Schwarzenegger may have been Republican.
The silence that fell across academia after Sept 11 was real. People lost tenure. That is less so opinion.
And that a large portion of the US population is swayed by celebrity is my opinion based on my experience.
I did write as if my exasperation and despair should be evident and excepted. That this country is monolithic was never intended, nor do I think that in the least. In fact, this country is so huge and diverse, that I feel coherence is becoming a problem. That's just another opinion.
I hope this helps. So no more politics on the social board?
Thanks Dinah, for speaking up.
Warmly,
fb

See, now I've alarmed you. You were better of not Googling him. Within limits I enjoy outraging myself. It's my default position. That's what you do when you read the papers or read history. Now Chris Hedges: I keep an eye out for him. America is such a big place. I have always really enjoyed American music, especially Blues and Alternative Country. I turned on the radio yesterday and there was Eric Bib talking from Sydney and playing his music. He will be at the festival near here. He was a delight. I thought it's not so bad, there are civilised people left. It's so hard to keep a sense of proportion in this world, mainly because people are worried.

I'm not an expert on the Tea Party. I'm sure my mother knows all the particulars, but I refuse to talk politics with her. I think that in some areas Tea Party candidates ran against traditional Republicans, while in others they run within the Republican party. I doubt that they have a big presence in the Democratic party.
All I know about Donald Trump is that he seems to like attention and publicity more than the average multi-millionaire. (Or is it billionaire? Whatever.) The Apprentice, and some sitcom appearances. I imagine he's getting plenty of attention with the sort of statement he's making.
No politics, or at least careful and respectful politics (which is easier said than done, perhaps), sounds like a good way to maintain positive feelings among a diverse group of people.

You know, s.o.r.r.y.
Sometimes it is the best thing to say. And to receive.
I wasn't offended. I felt more like someone was gently putting their hand on my arm at a cocktail party, like, o.k. that's enough.
I really didn't intend to Republican-bash. Mostly because I don't believe in it myself. That doesn't touch upon what seem to me more important issues.
Despite the hot potato game played around the gulf spill, that event was not caused by one party or another.
But I really do come to social for social. Thanks for caring, Dinah :-)

I took a little Valium and went out.
Guess who I saw?
The Blind Boys of Alabama!
They had 5000 people in the palms of their hands.
I had never thought I liked gospel much.
They were musically amazing, but it really came from their generosity and humility.
As good as Leonard Cohen. Good like that. Rapturous.
