Well Clueless must have been right about black and red being the colors of choice for her patients.
I agree with you about the mess on my hands. When I paint a wall I get covered with paint- hands, hair, feet (and not just the time I stepped into the bucket.)
I'm glad you had some success with fingerpainting (even with the mess) Dr. Clueless probably has many patients that it works for, it just isn't for me.

I am not artistic. As a kid I colored and drew, but I'd rather have been reading a book or watching TV.
I don't think I'd be good at basketweaving. All my popsicle boxes I made in girl scouts were lopsided and covered in glue.
I'm glad you're liking your basketweaving. I haven't found an arts or crafts type thing that I like.

I told this to Clueless and she still thought fingerpainting was a good idea.
In sixth grade my teacher Miss Rhymes with Ditch held up my picture to the whole class, said *this is exactly what I didn't want,* ripped it in half and told me to *clean up that mess.*
Now you know why I call her Clueless. At least she's listening to me about meds.

that fingerpainting can be a bit "regressive"
not necessarily helpful if one is not comfortable with it
maybe a more controlled medium would be more appropriate....perhaps poems!!but really... ya gotta respect where people are-respecting defenses/preferences

Well, ultimately, pdoc was trying to help. A little out of her bounds, perhaps. But she made you think about it. That's better than nothing, I think. And who knows, it might not be the thing for you right now, but in 10 years, you may just happen to pick up some red and black paint and make a special artistic contribution to this world.

p.s. poet- you are NOT a crappy artist. Whoever told you that was cruel, and wrong. Art is subjective. Purely, wonderfully subjective. You just have to decide that what you're creating is worthwhile, meaningful, amusing, or offensive. Whatever. But no matter how hard you try, it cannot be 'bad'. It's just impossible. It can only be 'bad' *TO* someone (i.e. some cruel person in your past). But it doesn't have to ever be 'bad' to you. And even if it IS 'bad' to you, it may be meaningful to someone else, perhaps Dr. Clueless.
Let's hope that her knowledge of psychopharmacology is more of a help to you than her art therapy attempts.
My cat would allow you to paint using her tail, as long as the paint is tuna-juice based. To her, 'good' art is seafood or chicken flavored, moist and with an abundance of gravy. I'm sure you guys can work out an apprenticeship agreement.

~~ Poet, could I offer one editorial change: don't blame Art,blame that horrible teacher. what a hideous way to treat Art. You and Art both deserve a huge apology from her.She obviously had no understanding of Art. Art has nothing to do with what anyone except the artist wants, esp. mean-minded sixth grade teachers. (What is it with sixth grade? does someone also have something against sixth grade? Sixth grade teachers are so often the worst. Sixth grade also deserves an apology from this teacher.)
I wish I could have seen what you did in art class then. Bet I would have liked it. Also bet that anyone who understood how to teach art would have encouraged you.
You're very likely wrong about whether you could do Art. But if it makes you feel bad about yourself, you shouldn't do it. Art can make anyone crazy-- esp. if they believe that it's about being "good" at Art (which is wrong, imo), and that they aren't.
Art is very misunderstood in the world, though. The whole "talent" thing is highly overrated.
I love poetry, though. So it may be our good fortune that you don't do art.

My mother used to ink up the Siamese's paw, and press it on those cards. He actually "signed" all our Christmas cards, from the time she first thought of that...
He was a very good pusscat, very tolerant of The MomCat. She would put his head in her mouth, for instance. And once she spread paper down the hall and we dipped each of his paws in a different color paint, and let him run down the hall. That was a science-type thing, I think to see gaits? Or just to paint his paws...
He was a very good pusscat. Maybe you could paw paint, instead?

Amazing how that damn Miss Rhymes with Ditch can still get to me decades later.
Knowing Dr. Clueless if I did paint her a picture and bring it in she'd have forgotten she suggested fingerpainting.
She does seem to know her psychopharmacology and she's board certified in it so I hope she didn't cheat on the test to pass.
I will use tuna juice paint on your cat's tail. Though I don't think I'd get much paint on the paper since she'd be licking it off.

You are right, it was Miss Rhymes with Ditch that traumatized me. She does owe me an apology. She owes everybody she ever taught and I use the term taught loosely an apology. If she's still alive I hope she's in a nursing home being forced to draw pictures exactly one way.
I had a high school teacher who made up for Miss R.W.D. she liked my poetry and encouraged me to write it. I'll bet she would have punched out Miss R.W.D. for me. Wish I'd asked.

I draw little paw prints when I put the cats names on cards to my mother and sister. I suspect all four paws of claws would come out if I tried to use real paws to make prints, but maybe if I wore heavy gloves.
TheMomCat had an interesting way to teach you about gaits. I hope the cat got people tuna as a reward.
