Names without faces

Posted by curtm on May 12, 2006, at 15:40:45

Maybe this should go on the relationships board, but I feel like I have dumped enough trash in it for a while. Phew someone take the garbage out!

Anyway this is about the relationship that my "name" has with each of your "names." I don't know wht you look like. I don't know what you sound like. Some of you I don't even know what gender you are. But none of that matters. I try to imagine a "face" on the "names." The face is just something that comes first to mind.

For example:
orchid (a beautiful flower)
happyflower (daisy or sunflower)
gardergirl (plants orchids and happyflowers)
bassman (either plays a guitar or likes to fish?)
declan (scottish highlander/plays bagpipes)
fairywings (something like tinkerbell)
FamesK (western outlaw for some reason?)
Dinah (Dinah won't ya blow your horn)
clearskies (partly sunny)
Phillipa (Philippine islands)
wishingstar ("When you wish upon a star...")
B2chica (tough one- girl flying stealth bomber)
madeline (cartoon girl on PBS)
Larry Hoover (guy I went to high school with)
LadyBug (uuuh....a camel)
DonBristol (NASCAR)
crazyteresa (you don't want to know)
jakeman (the "jakemeister")
Dr. Bob (any guy named "Bob")

I can't write 'em all down now but if you want to know what picture comes to mind with your name, just ask me.

Love

I trust you mean "finger" in the rebellious middle finger way? This is so hilarious. If you knew me in real life, you'd know what a timid nerdy type I am.

And what picture should be associated with curtm?

Only you can determine that, not I. What comes to mind first? Everybody will have a different "picture" (or association) with my name. I hope it brings happy thought, but if not, that's ok.

You know what? That's pretty hilarious, because I didn't have racecars in mind when I signed on as Racer back in 98 -- but mostly because I *do* need to be EVERYWHERE all at once.

LoL! Guess you've got good intuition, Curtis.

ladybug's definitely a cute little ladybug. Lots of dots, not a dark red color, but bleached to a burnt orange color. Rather unlike a camel, methinks

Caedmon's Hymn was one thing we had to read -- aloud -- in linguistics. It's one of the oldest existing examples of written Old English, as well as one of the earliest examples of poetry written in any Germanic language.

In my Linguistics class, we all had to read one line aloud, so I not only feel warm and fuzzy whenever I see Caedmon's name on a post, I also think of the comforting blue cover of my linguistics text, and

Nu scylun hergan hefaenricaes uard
metudæs maecti end his modgidanc
uerc uuldurfadur— sue he uundra gihuaes
eci dryctin or astelidæ
he aerist scop aelda barnum
heben til hrofe haleg scepen
tha middungeard moncynnæs uard
eci dryctin æfter tiadæ
firum foldu frea allmectig

Which I won't torture you with. I found a bunch of different rescencions, and can't remember how to pronounce much of that at all, but here's the link to the Wikipedia entry if you want to read more, and the English translation I got there, too.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Caedmon

Now [we] must honour the guardian of heaven,
the might of the architect, and his purpose,
the work of the father of glory
— as he, the eternal lord, established the beginning of wonders.
He, the holy creator,
first created heaven as a roof for the children of men.
Then the guardian of mankind, the eternal lord,
the lord almighty, afterwards appointed the middle earth,
the lands, for men.

(OK, my husband didn't know about it either. Surely I'm not the only one who remembers it?)

And your name reminds me of the singer Frida, who I think was part of ABBA? She had a hit, with a song called "I know there's something going on," which was OK, but on the back of it, she had set a poem by Dorothy Parker to music. "Threnody"

Lilacs blossom just as sweet
Now my heart has shattered
If I bowled it down the street,
Who's to say it mattered?

etc. That's from memory, I could probably find more, but you know what? If you're interested enough to read it, you're interested enough to read her other works, which I know can be found somewhere online. (They're post copyright, I'm nearly certain.)

And I like this post a lot, too.

Our brains are funny funny things.

When I selected the posting name Madeline it was because I liked the character Madeline in the movie "interview with the vampire".

Madeline elects to become a vampire (and ensures her own death) so that she may become a permament mother to a child that will not die.

And yet, Madeline (the cartoon character) IS a child that lives her days in an orphanage without the love of a mother.

Hmmm, was I inadvertently (but of course on purpose) revealing the two conflicting sides of me? The mother and saviour of a lost child, AND the lost child itself?

I wonder what Freud would have to say about THAT!

Great thread.

Hi Curt,

You create some really wonderful threads. I don't look like Edgar Allen Poe, but I so wish I could write like he did. I look more like Dorothy Parker, ditto for what I said about writing like Poe.

I dated a guy named Curt, so you look like him. It's not an insult, he was cute. ;)
