Yeah. Me too. I can't be there in person, but I can write something.

Perhaps those who cannot attend could contribute to a poster session, and those who can could present?

And the submission deadline is September 6...Since Kali Munro's in Toronto, I was thinking about including her. But then the focus would be online groups rather than advice for therapists. How about that? A "workshop" like this?
> Online Peer Support Groups -- and Support Group Members
>
> The Internet empowers patients by connecting them not only to information, but also to each other. This workshop introduces participants to two specific online peer support groups, one small and private, the other large and public. The moderators of the groups explain how the groups function, including what the goals of the groups are, how the group members interact, what topics are discussed, how the moderators moderate, and what the pros and cons of the groups are. The focus of the session, however, is small group discussion with group members about their experiences with this type of resource. In this workshop, in other words, patients are empowered to teach doctors. All participants regroup for concluding questions and answers. And what if she's not available and it were just us?
If people who couldn't be there wanted to contribute something in writing, maybe we could work that in somehow?

I'll make that date on my calendar. It may conflict with a trade show but I think it may work out.
Does this mean we'll be the topic of a workshop and we have to present something?

Thanks to everyone who's volunteered to help with this!

I know this is past the submission deadline, and I don't know if I could be there. Or for that matter that I wouldn't hide under the table while having a major social anxiety attack, but I could write something and pass it to somebody to read.
In other words if you submitted the presentation and it is accepted, I will try to participate in whatever way I can.

Hi people
I was just curious about this presentation thing. Would this be like a "members only" type of thing? Or can people come and watch?
I don't know anything about psychology or therapy or anything like that, so I wouldn't be able to contribute any good ideas...plus it would be absolutely terrifying to interact with strangers in a small group.
If I can't come and just watch, can someone fill me in on the details?

not sure how it works... but if you aren't presenting there might be an attendance fee.

I'm afraid I don't at all understand what you're talking about.
Could you explain it in full sentences maybe?
I hope to be at the second Babble party, if I manage to make a financial recovery.

Any word on what day of the week this may be on? I have my doubts as to whether I'd be useful (age, haven't been here too long, etc.), but should I be wrong, I'd be interested in helping out somehow, so long as my exam schedule doesn't end up interfering.

I'm not sure if financially I'll be in a place to go or not.
But wouldn't our real names have to be known?
For at least some of us, mightn't that be a problem?

I won't be able to do it. I am in the middle of lot of moving and resettling.
If there is anything that we can post here in babble which will be of use, I can do that.

> If you plan to distribute handout materials at your workshop, they must be approved in advance by the Subcommittee on Workshops. You need to submit a copy of the material ... by February 4, 2006.
And regarding confidentiality:
> We want you to be aware that APA has an open press policy at all scientific sessions during the meeting... For the purpose of news reporting, members of the media who have been credentialed by the APA Press Room may audio/videotape and/or take notes during any or all of these presentations except when patient confidentiality might be compromised or a presenter specifically requests no audio/videotaping by the press be permitted.
Should I request no taping by the press? No note-taking, even?

You need to submit a copy of the material ... by February 4, 2006.I guess we’d better get cracking then. Have you had any thoughts about structure? What sort of material might we distribute in handouts? My first idea is that it might be good to have (at the very least) a handout of brief quotes from Babble users… but I may come up with more elaborate ideas after I’ve thought about it for a while. I’m sure other people have ideas… I’m very keen on handouts at conferences because I think it gives participants something to focus their initial responses on.

> Should I request no taping by the press? No note-taking, even?Well, I won’t be there so maybe my opinion doesn’t matter. But I think if the press are going to be at the conference, then perhaps this session might be newsworthy (because it involves interaction between professionals and clients). I think it could work to our advantage if we clients want to use the session to get the attention of professionals. So I would say it might be a good idea so say no taping, but to allow note-taking, unless all the Babblers who will be present (a) don’t mind being taped; or (b) prefer not to allow note-taking.

Cool!
I would like to not be videotaped.
I'm OK with audiotape as long as it is used only by the reporter and not broadcast (my understanding is that attendees can also use audiotape).
I'm fine with people taking notes.
I'm assuming that I will be Fallsfall. I don't want to give my real name.
Will there be at least two of us in each small group? Are all the attendees psychiatrists (MDs)? Will they be interested in medication management or in psychological things or both?

I'm surprised this is the first time I noticed this thread. Where have I been??? :-\
This actually sounds fun. And the fact that these Drs would be there to learn from us, makes it even cooler. It will be very interesting to see which babblers can still participate as the time gets closer.
Do you know the max number of people who can sign up for your presentation? I'd be curious to know how many Drs you are estimating will be per babbler in each small group. I think it is a great idea to give the Drs both perspectives. Your perspective as the Dr. who administers the board and our perspective as the ones benefiting from this type of interaction.
Maybe you can do some general polls on here and summarize it on a handout. Maybe ask how often we visit the website, how helpful we find it, our level of participation, how many of the boards we use/participate in, etc. Just make it anonymous. And you can also ask things like if we have a tdoc/pdoc, have we told them about our participation in a board like this. Or something like, if our tdoc/pdoc had suggested using a support website like this, would we have taken their advice and joined. The list can go on and on and on. Since these are Drs, I'm assuming they'll love seeing numbers to back up whatever is said. I know I would! I love charts and graphs. :-D
hmmmm...never been to Canada or seen Niagra Falls...

I totally admire each of the babblers who are going to be there. And do stuff to help others. You're all so bloody brave, I'm thinking I wouldn't mind jumping on the bandwagon. But I don't know if it's allowed, at this point. It is kind of late in the game already. But I feel like I have something I could add, I guess that's a start.

I would love love LOVE to do a 3-minute stand-up comedy.. or write the lines for an actress.. because I can tell you this, I'd have every psych looking at themselves and rolling in the aisles. What a piece that would be.

Okay? Don't panic, I was manic.
But the thought was so much FUN, I was having a lot of fun with it. Still do, even now the thought just makes me smile.
Seriously, I hope you have a good time. It would be interesting to attend though. I think it would be useful. Is it too late to get involved in attending?
