You'd make a wonderful author. Perhaps you should write a play about Babble...or better yet......"Babble, the Musical". :-)

Couldn't you see it as a head start on that?
You could take it with you and work on it.
It could be a very productive week :-)

From a Chicago insider that I thought I would pass on.
Spoc sent me this on babblemail and I thought it was well worth posting.Millenium Park is indeed beautiful,
and convenient to plenty of other things of interest. That's a more
"citified" area. I think people get the most well-rounded picture of Chicago
if they see not only that type of thing, but also the gorgeous,
bustling but more neighborhoody areas to the north a bit. So I also wanted to
suggest, maybe for the second day, the area in Lincoln Park around Cafe
Brauer (sp?).Don't know if you've been there lately, but it is a beautiful building that has a restaurant, and (in summer) concessions and tables outside,
that overlook a lovely pond. It even has foot-paddle boats you can rent cheaply, that are shaped like big swans. Then, to one side is the
famous Lincoln Park Zoo; to another side is an atrium or whatever you call it like Dinah was talking about; all around is gorgeous landscaping and gardens; and straight ahead is the lakefront and beach where you could all walk and see one of the best of the city beaches (which also has
some restaurants now, including a cute one atop the North Ave. Beach "boathouse"). SO many things to do/see, such a pretty area, and totally
"no pressure" as Dinah suggests. (And also, various areas to duck into for cover in case of rain.)Outside this area of the zoo/park are plenty more restaurants and cafes. (And if you walked around those neighborhoods, you would get to see
some historic brownstones and quaint streets that you would never see in "downtown proper.") But just for your reference, to walk from the part
of Lincoln Park I am talking about to the Art Institute and Millenium Park area would take about 30 to 45 minutes (buses, cabs and trains are
of course also readily available). But even better, in less than half that time if you walk south on what would be Lake Shore Drive leading
into Mich Ave, you would also pass the area to which you referred -- where Water Tower,
Ghiradelli, etc. are.Feel free to post this if you think anyone might want to hear about it. There are tons of good maps available, including walking maps. I also accidentally came across a listing of some other hostel-type accomodations (I do hope no one is still thinking about staying at the U of
C's... Not a convenient area or pretty/inviting, outside the University grounds.I've always wanted to do a swan paddle boat, anybody else?

Because I have to make those nonrefundable reservations soon, probably tonight.
I'll assume we're doing something the evening of the 3rd and the day of the 4th. I'm not sure I can make the third at all, but I know I can make the day of the fourth, but it'd be tough also making the day of the fifth, since I promised I'd only be away overnight.
Is it pretty much decided we'll do something the day of the fourth?

I'm assuming the same thing as to schedule. I'll be arriving on the 3rd if anyone wants to do something that night, and leaving Sunday morning - but not too early (yawn).

How 'bout lots of pictures of Dr. Bob?
I hate photos of myself so much that I hack them out of personal photos. I'd hate to have to break my screen.

Awwww, I'd hate to do to Babble what I did to bargain movies or binge drinking. :D
I wish you could get the full effect. Voice, facial expression. I can't do it when I'm trying, but when I'm not, I can put anyone off anything. :)
And still... not appreciated as much as you might think.

Hey, hubby hasn't acted on making arrangements to extend his stay and include me yet.
If it doesn't work out, I'll do what I can to try to fly in cheap for the 3rd/4th. I can also drive, but it's about the limit for how far I like to drive by myself.

The details can be still worked out, but people have to make travel plans.
And it would appear that it is not widely known that all are invited.

In reply to A Few More Ideas, posted by Poet on May 16, 2005, at 0:15:05
I'm not wed to the Millenium Park idea. I just did a google search on Chicago and posted the idea to get things rolling again. The area around Lincoln Park looks nice. I think I'll only be around on Friday from 4 or 5 pm on till mid to late afternoon Saturday.
I promised to only be away one night.
Where's the best area to find a hotel, given tentative plans (such as they are).
Once I get the flights and hotel planned, I don't care how late we decide the rest of it.
Though I think Dr. Bob might be hinting that he wants more info before he posts anything.
Dinner Friday night at ____ p.m. at _________.
Activities Saturday
Meet
_____ at ____________
Anyone want to suggest something definite? I'm totally ignorant about Chicago, but I'll be there.
I just need to know where it's best to stay, and what times we're talking about.

I wish I could have an adventure in Chicago. Those who are going are strangers to me, but it would be exciting to meet people I don't know. How many people are going anyways? I swear I'm not that "crazy" IRL...so there is no harm in meeting me. If I could go, I would have wanted to be involved in the planning process.
I know that I could take the bus (an 18hr ride) to Chicago and stay in a hostel, but I've never travelled on my own before...plus, I only have an outdated US passport and I'm pretty sure I won't be able to cross the border. Otherwise, I really wish I could have an adventure...be it in Chicago or elsewhere. :-) Hey, anybody want to get together in Ontario?

i wasnt coming but now Im feeling so very very curious
My only thoughts are that it is going to be a very strange experience and we will feel very on display if you know what I mean. Maybe to reduce the initial strangeness of the whole event there could be a secure website (no copying of pics option allowed sort of thing) put up and only those who have confirmed going can have access and if they want to post a pic they can, just so that people get an idea of who each other is before. just a thought I had.

Dinah -
I go to Chicago for business + family fun at least twice a year. I always find the cheapest hotel rates at www.quickbook.comI like to stay near Michigan Avenue. From Michigan Avenue you can walk to lots of places ... some farther than others. Or it's an inexpensive taxi ride since it's centrally located to the places the planning committee are talking about.
I am hoping I can come.
