Another protest here is that a poster contends that Dr. Bob's [civility guidlines]tend to {ostrcize}people. The [civility guidlines ] envoke an expulsion of 1,2,4,8,16,32,64...weeks, which the poster indicated to him/her amounted to [ostricism].

I see you see this as a matter of justice.

I don't. I happen to like the civility rules. I happen to like civility in general, and I have no particular problem with consequences for actions. Particularly when those consequences are well spelled out and warning is given.

We'll have to agree to disagree here.

What are the componants of justice?

Posted by Lou Pilder on February 23, 2003, at 12:04:34

In reply to Lou's response to Dinah's post (6) » Dinah, posted by Lou Pilder on February 23, 2003, at 11:42:20

Friends,
Justice is much more than making a body of rules and applying punishments for breaking them. If that is all there was to {justice}, then the slave codes of colonial America and West Indies could be looked at as [just].
One of the foundational componants of {justice} is to look at the laws in the particular body , or code, and ask if they are in any way, arbitrary, caprecious or descriminatory. Next, would be to examine if they are well-defined, which means not [overbroad] or [far-reaching]. Next, do the laws create favoritism. Next, are they applied equally. Next, is there due-processs to contest.
This is not all that needs to be questioned.

SJ,
You wrote,[...what does this have to do...?].
The purpose of the admin. board is to discuss:
A) Problems with the site
B) Ideas for improvment
This discussion has many posts from those that are giving ideas for improvemeny and percieved problems with the site.
Civility is one part of the discussion, and it is my deep conviction that by having an admin. that could listen to the members of the community as to their grievences, then constructive changes could be made to improve the civilty. I believe that the aspects that I and others here, have discussed so far, and there are much more, could be a viable means to [improve] civility.
The example at the lunch counter that I used created [better] civility in the community. Now all public establishments are open to all.
In another situation around that time, my mother drove us to Sunlight pool in Cincinnati. Sunlight Pool is the world's largest recirculating swimming pool in the world. The attendent at the gate refused to allow us in because one of my friends with us was black.
Later there was protest and the operators of the pool [changed] their policy and admitted all people and the pool is still open, still a great place to swim. One of the posters here had posted about [change]. And change can be accomplished when the community has a venue to discuss problems and ideas for improvement.

Dinah,
You wrote,[...I'm sorry if I upset you...it was not my intent...]
Well, that would depend on your conception of what constitutes being [upset]. Being [upset] could be on a continuim from a brief outrage to profanity directed to the other person and beyond.
Regardless of whether you did or did not, I understand that it was not you intention to do so.
Best regards,
Lou

> What do any of this have to do with this board ?

It has to do with the fact it is takes many wheels to make this board run. One half of this board is Dr. Bob's creation of it; the other half is the community who make it up. Without either, this board would not exist.

Lou,

I don;t see how your example of abuse against black people is connected tot his.

Are you suggesting that Dr Bob is racist?? As far as I can see, he deals with every person the same. If you are uncivil, you get a warning, if you do it again, you get a ban. What ever your race, religion etc.

WOuld you prefer that we were open to any kind of abuse and incivility here??

I have an internet stalker. he is highly abusive about me, and has managed to follow me to most internet sites I use. This is one of my only havens from him.

If he were to find me here, do you think he has the right to say what ever he wishes about me??

Civility, to me, is something that should be practiced by everyone. I feel safe here (where I don;t elsewhere). That is down to Dr Bobs rules.

I, personally, would leave this site and never return if Dr Bob were to allow un-civil posts.

Lou.

What you are posting about is about peoples rights. Do you believe that people have a right to be un-civil?? Do you honestly believe that if I were to say nasty things to you / about you, I have a right to do this??

I don't believe this. I believe we all have a right to be protected.

Those posts do not answer my question as to whether you think those being un-civil really have a right to do so. A simple yes or no would help me out here.

I have read all the replies on this thread, and still do not understand. Sorry for this.

I would like to know whether you believe I have a right to be un-civil to you if I so wish.

NikkiT2,
To further give some mor light on your question and my response, let us look at A.Gibson's next post which he was blocked for.
Now {if} I was the moderator of this board, I would consider other alsternatives to blocking A. Gibson[under these circumstances]. I would have simply asked him to clarify what he meant and cite examples of such and allow me to address his responses to the clarification requested. Then, if there was still no [mitigation] of the situation or concilliation, {then} he would have received what he requested. This is one of the reasons that I ask people for clarificatio,ie: it gives the other poster a means to {mitigate} or [reconcillate]with the other poster, which promotes harmony among the members of the community [which is what civility is expected to accomplish] .
