Dear Folks,
I have a couple of questions about increasing. I am not feeling fantastic, but more importantly I have been having some anxiety problems lately. I am still at 15mgs, but have been cleared for 20 if I need them. I was prescribed lexapro for anxiety and panic with depression. I had a panic episode--my first since august--in my evening class Weds. I lost my train of thought and then a wave of adreneline hit me: the lights got brighter, my stomach turned over and I felt like you do when you've almost been in a wreck--shaky and disoriented and woozy. Two factors worth mentioning: I take 50 mgs trazodone for pain mangement but have halved my dose because it makes me too groggy and it's hard to wake up. I had been using the birth control patch, but I had odd side effects like thickening, oily hair, bloating and gas, and headaches, so now I'm taking my first pack of a pill. I was mid-cycle when this happened. I have been more irritable than usual, but with good reason--massive stacks to grade before a conference on Thursday, packing to do, a husband working overtime as I try to get this all done, and while he is home he's taking on all of these monumental (and non-essential) tasks that preclude the child care I need for him to cover while I try to get all my ducks in a row. Then I will be staying with my mentor and also my closest friend from graduate school who gets on my nerves not just a little. And the conference, which I am not completely ready for, is in New Orleans, where I've never been and I hate going places on my own that I am not familiar with although I do it very well. SO my question is this: how do you know when you are ready to increase? How do you decide what is just situational and what is the underlying disorder? How much do these other factors play into how I feel right now?Help! Edna

Hi Bride2be,
It's so good to hear that you're feeling better! Sounds like a vacation is just what you needed. (That and an increase to 20 mgs.) I really hope things continue going well for you.

Hi,
I really appreciate the feedback on this subject. It's just so strange that Lexapro is less effective during my period, not to mention frustrating. My period is almost over and I'm starting to feel a little bit better but I do NOT want to go through this again next month.
I discussed this with my pdoc and he's asked me to get some blood work done to check my hormone levels. I'll do this around the end of the month. If anything useful comes out of the blood work I'll be sure to let everyone know.
In the meantime, you guys are all fabulous and I feel very lucky to be part of such a fantastic support network.

jlyne-----since the boost in meds i feel much better. i am about to start my period so we have to wait and see how that goes. the 10's just did not seem to work very well with me. my depression is gone and the azxiety is getting better everyday. talking with you guys really helps though. nobosy else can really understand, ya know? i am glad that i went up to 20 and i think i will get better each day. my mood swings are better too, i have not snapped at my fiance in a week, and he likes that! if you have any other questions for me, feel free to ask! good luck!

In reply to Joint Pain with Lexapro, posted by linnie on April 2, 2004, at 13:22:47
Every time I start on an SSRI, I get terrible muscle aches and joint pain. I attribute this to the muscle aches contributing to my already tight muscles from Fibromyalgia which put a strain on the ligaments and tendons, pulling the joint out of whack slightly. I'm currently trying Prozac (after trials of Effexor, Celexa and Lexapro), and once again I got terrible muscle aches, but I'm sticking with it longer this time to see if the current jaw, neck and shoulder tightness will decrease with time. I've been on Prozac for 2.5 months. We're trying Prozac due to extreme fatigue and weight gain on the others.

edna---i was on 10 for 10 days and i felt like my anxiety was getting worse. i just felt like it was the time to go up to 20's. my doctor thought it would be fine. if you feel like what you are taking now is not enough, then you may want to talk to your doctor about an increase. you will know when the lexapro is not doing its job. i starting 20's on friday and experienced NO SIDE EFFECTS. i mean i yawn alot, but i was doing that before the increase. talk to your doctor and if you have any other questions, feel free to ask me. good luck. we are all rooting for you!

Hi Bride2be,
Don't worry, the yawning will go away in about another week or so. When I increased to 15 mgs I was yawning every 5! It was strange. But like I said, it goes away and it's a pretty common side effect from what I hear.

Hi Edna,
Situational stress is tolerable, but if it leads to panic attacks then it might be time for an increase. In my opinion medication should help you to tolerate stress and anxiety in a normal fashion rather than have it lead to an attack. Increasing might will probably help you cope with your situational stress a little better.
I have anxiety/panic and depression also. It seems like lower doses of Lexapro work very well for depression but higher doses are needed to help with anxiety. I suggest starting 20 mgs. (I'm thinking of increasing too.) I hope it all goes well for you!

Edna...I would definately say mostly situational...We do have to understand that there are times when the stress are going to get to us and that the meds arent enough for this one thing...You might have to come over to the social one because think I will get in trouble for not talking meds...redirected Lexaproers is the thread..please come over...But you have to give yourself a break and realize you have a lot on your plate and you are doing awsome just to be able to get through everything you are...SO give yourself a pat on the back and keep talking so that we can help you through...But think you have to come on over to the other side...redirected lexaproers...Take care my friend and good luck...Mystic

Edna...
I feel your pain. I am in my last 19 days of graduate school and trying to finish my thesis, my hours for my internship, find a new place to live in a different state, get rid of all my stuff here, pack, go to class and keep my sanity. I moved up to 20mg and was feeling pretty good. I had a crash on last friday and cried for about two hours straight, just sobbing Felt a lot better after getting it out. I wrote my P-doc in a panic (my p-doc is great, she is bi-polar (mostly depression) and so she knows a lot about the diease) She said that its really hard for us when we have been feeling good then start to have some bad times. She said the best and worst things in life come with stress...weddings, graduation, divorces ect. She said the important thing was to take it day by day and not think just because you are having a hard time right now that "it" is coming back.
Good Luck, God Bless,
Lexy

Thanks Mystic!
The increase to 20 was going AWESOME until this past week and I had my breakdown. Now, I am just feeling really unconfident, its hard to go from really feeling like "YESSSSSSS this is finally going away." but then this creeps up on me... hopefully I will be on the up swing again soon.I am wondering if it maybe my body adjusting to the new dosage? Its strange I had my period last week but feel like I have PMS this week. Who knows! My Mom is coming to visit me on Thursday to help me pack and hopefully a little shopping too. Good luck...5 1/2 half weeks till the precious baby joins the world.
lots of love,
Lexy

Hey lexy...i was just talking to my sister this morning and we were saying how it is weird that we are worse after our periods are over than before or during..I have tons of energy during but after is when I dont feel very good..She is also on lex 10mgs it works good for her but she went on it just to even out her moods because she felt she was yelling at everyone too much..not because of strong anxiety/depression..but just an FYI..you are not alone...Mystic

hi guys. i have noticed something i wanted to ask you all about. i take my lex at night...usually between 10 and 11 pm. i have noticed a dizziness/anxiety that usually hits me around 2-3 pm. do you all think taking the lex in the morning might alleviate this? when do you all take it? anything pdocs have said?
thanks...EM

So I knew it was too good to be true. I went up to 10mgs about 2 weeks ago and didn't experience any side effects until now- I went on lex for anxiety and yet today I'm experiencing more depression then I know what to do with. Has anybody else experienced this during a change in dose? I was expecting increased anxiety. Not this. I feel like I can just sit in a corner and cry.

i take my lex as soon as i wake up. the time is usually like 9am. it works best for me. i am groggy at about 6pm, but it is not too bad. maybe you would be happier if you took it in the morning. my doc told me not to take mine at night. when i first got on it, i took it at 12pm and i just did not like it, so she said to take it as soon as i wake up. i find that it works out pretty good for me. hope that helps.
