Hello Lizzy & Gladys,

I was on Celexa some time ago and it does make you more
sociable. What other positive or negative side effects
have you had from Celexa. I take Wellbutrin 150mg
per day and will increase to another 100mg starting
tomorrow. I will say I miss the social part of celexa.
I truly do. Wellbutrin does not do that for me, but
it motivates me and helps me focus much more and I
think clearer on it somehow. Celexa was wonderful
with its ability to help me overcome my social
ineptness or social phobia. Have you gained much
weight from celexa? I don't recall huge weight gain.
Loved those carbohydrates though, but struggled to
lose any weight I may have wanted to. I am just curious
what and how you feel about it. Wellbutrin is not
a drug to make one calm, at least not me.

I hope I did not interfere with the thread. Apologies
if I have done so,, but the celexa stuff has been
on my mind for 2 days now and maybe it won't be
so bad if I take it with Wellbutrin.

If you care to share your thoughts I would greatly appreciate
them.

Thanks,
Jacquie

I have urinary problems from effexor (I think--Scott suggested it could be from the serzone, but it started before I added serzone to my cocktail). I have been looking for info on this.

What I have been able to come up with is that there are various serotonin receptors in the bladder and ureter that cause the muscle tissue to contract. With serotonergic medications, it is possible that these receptors are activated, causing spasms in the urinary tract, which causes the urgency and frequency.

I am still trying to find out which serotonin receptors are responsible, and whether some of them can be blocked. I will try to post the abstract references sometime soon--I think you can find them in the archives--search under 5HT4 and my name (noa).

Hi Kelly,
It's been a long while since you wrote that about weight gain. You wrote that you tried Wellbutrin. Did you still gain on Wellbutrin as well as the rest? I heard that you can lose weight while on it. I am going off Celexa because I gained about 15-20 lbs. I can't seem to shed any. I am getting onto Wellbutrin and hope it will help me lose the weight I gained because I am getting depressed now because of how I feel about myself. Pointless to take the ADs then! Any info from anyone would be great!

Hi Gladys,

I'm about to do the same thing, ie, quit Celexa because of weight gain. I've been taking a small dose of Celexa with Wellbutrin. The Celexa was added to reduce the edginess I experienced as a side effect of the WB. It does accomplish that, but I've had it with this non-stop weight gain.

My psychiatrist just prescribed this medication for my anxiety. I have only taken one pill so I am no expert on this drug. Reading about all the side effects is pretty scary.

Hi Jacquie,
I really like Celexa. I didn't gain weight (has been about 5 months on mostly 20 mg dosage). I actually felt a bit nauseous at first and wasn't as interested in eating as I used to be. My original side effects were: restless legs and feet, tingling feet, decreased sensation in the private areas, increased urgency to urinate, spacey feeling, extreme tiredness. These mostly went away after about a month. I guess I still get restless legs while sleeping (so my husband says). I need to sleep 10 - 12 hours a night. I'm going to try my med. in the morning instead of at night (thought maybe the restless legs was not allowing me good sleep). I got some sensation back in the private area, but not totally (no problem with orgasm though). I love Celexa though. It makes me very sociable whereas before I was somewhat anti-social. I feel more calm and able to deal with problems and stress. I am much happier than before. I pretty much have a positive outlook on life whereas before I didn't. Of course, going to therapy helps and I'm reading a lot of good stuff like "Wherever You Go, There You Are" (about meditation) and "Don't Sweat the Small Things - and they're all small" and an article about the Dalai Lama and how he analyzes thoughts fully (like anger and considering all factors of becoming angry - will it help? did I cause some of it? that the other person is both good and bad and think of positive things in person - how can this experience help expand my thoughts?, etc. Sorry to go on and on - just wanted to add these suggestions in addition to the medicine.

Take Care,
Lizzy

Well, I'm on 30mg of Celexa going down to 20mg next week and possibly will go up on the wellbutrin (been on 100mg in the a.m. for ten days.) I have been edgy, but don't yet know if that was due to PMS or not. Hoping it was, because I don't want to add the celexa back in to help for that because of the weight gain! I will let you all know if I lose some of the weight once totally off the celexa (whether or not I can lose it), and about the social aspects or anti social aspects.
Lizzy,
can you tell me where you got the article on the Dalai Lama or what the name is? Who knows, maybe it will help with some of the edginess. Thanks!

Celexa definitely helps some people (it does me) in counteracting the edginess sometimes
produced as a side effect of Wellbutrin. I've taken them together (only 10 mg of Celexa with 300 mg of WB)for the past year and a half, and it's worked pretty well. I too am quitting Celexa however, because of major weight gain. I don't know what's worse: the grumpy moods/short temper that comes with the WB or feeling fat from taking Celexa. There must be something else that can reduce/eliminate the edginess from WB without gaining an easy 20-30 lbs in the process.

I've been taking Celexa (20mg) for about a week now for anxiety/panic. The first couple of days on the drug were tough (nausea, shaking, trouble sleeping). Now the side effects are beginning to ease some. Everyone I spoke with said to give it at least two weeks before giving up on it. The first week is the toughest because it takes SSRI's a little time for your body to adjust. I'm feeling better. Am now able to drive and went back to work after a month two days ago. I'm not over this yet (probably never will be), but I am learning to not let it control my life. The drug is only part of the solution, the mental/spirital approach to the whole anxiety/panic thing is important. Have you tried the book "Power Over Panic"? It helps. Good Luck!!

Hi--
I have been on zoloft for about three years and it suddenly stopped working. I changed shrinks (not because I did not like him, but it was through the University and they don't want to continue treating me. They need the space for other students which I completely understand).
My new doc suggested that I stay on the zoloft for a while and add the celexa. He said that I could split the pill in half if I wanted and start on 10 mgs, but I chose to start with the 20.
I've been taking it for about 2 weeks now. I started taking it in the morning but it made me sleep all day. Then I switched to evenings.
I still have great difficulties sleeping at night. I have no difficulty staying awake all night and then sleeping during the day. I can't really say if it is the celexa doing this as all my life I have been a nightowl and given the slightest opportunity my internal clock will flip flop and I have the hardest time straightening it out.
oh yeah. Now I remember what I was going to say:)
I was taking the zoloft for depression and incredible anger that I could not control which nearly cost me my life and my marriage. Needless to say I am still here and my marriage is better than ever. However, what made me go back to the doc was severe anxiety/panic. I could not get out of bed to go to work. I wound up quitting my job because I thought it just wasn't fair to them to put them through what I knew would be a long drawn out affair to get myself back under control.
I did experience some stomach upset from the zoloft periodically. If I did not take it with my morning coffee I was in agony. I have not experienced this with the celexa, so that is good. Anyway, I guess that's all for now. I hope to hear from you (and any others who wish) about your experiences and how you are doing.

Take care
Leslie

Glenda, let me know how it is going. I am one week in with no good effects yet (for anxiety, anyway), but I am noticing the jaw-clenching. (Which I als experienced with Effexor and Zoloft).

Hi everyone!
Bear with me people...This is probably going to be long.
I am 21 years old. I have been on so many different meds, since I was 16, that I can't list them all. Been on anti-depressants, anti-psychotics, and stuff for my OCD and anxiety. They put me on celexa today. I am kinda happy about it. I have read the threads and really do feel positive about it compared to all the others I've been on. My head does hurt now, but my life has been filled with migranes... no big deal yet. I was put on celexa for my anxiety. I was sick of meds and feeling like I couldn't live without my pills. It's been a year since my last meds:zoloft, respirdal and trazadone. I would like to say to some people writing on here(can't remember names): that a family doctor prescribing anti-depressants is kinda scary to me, that every drug has a side affect, it's finding the one that works best for you that matters, that celexa is suppossed to have the least side effects of the AD's on the market here now, and that the people looking for "the usual weight gain/loss side effect" should know that it's...uh, I forgot the word, well I mean that it doesn't have truely one, it's different for everyone. These are just MY opinions, take them or leave them, but don't hate me because of them. I am not qualified or anything else like that. I guess I forgot my point, tired by now. Well, I guess I say "Thanks for listening."

Hey, I am new here, but just started Celexa a little more than a month ago. At first I tried it for a month, and then my dr switched me to Paxil to try, b/c I had horrible Insomnia with the Celexa. Paxil was horrible, so back to Celexa I went. Now I am so tired all the time, i cant figure it out. Do you think I should increas dosage or decrease? I dont think i want to decrease, but i am afraid to decrease too for worse side effects. But I would rather have insomnia than be sleepy all the time! The sexual side effects I have not noticed, b/c i have no boyfriend currently! Lol. The yawning is constant, my teachers probably think i hate their classes! But it is much better than Zoloft or Paxil In my opinoin.

I've been on Celexa for about a year and a half, 40mg a day. Yes, sleepy sometimes, but I've noticed that is worse during the seasonal changes, I'm actually starting to feel a little more energy with Spring/Summer upon us. I still have depressing thoughts, but I cope so much better with all the crud that happens in life. No sexual side affects, except perhaps less drive, but then I was like that before! The worst part is the delayed weight gain, it sneaks up on you, and I have gained 30 pounds and that is AWFUL! Memory loss, yes, but not bad. More of a trouble concentrating, and total lack of motivation. Don't know how much longer I want to take this drug, I'm thinking if I was thinner I wouldn't be so depressed!!

Dear Kathylynn,
How does the delayed weight gain work? When did you first gain some weight? How much and over what period of time? I've been on Celexa for 5 months and initially lost weight (about 7 lbs.)because I was depressed and the med. made me nauseous (for the first month or so). I've gained back like 4 or 5 lbs. over the last 4 months. I don't know if it's the Celexa or because I feel better that I gained the weight. I'm really worried about weight creeping up on me because I needed to lose the initial weight I lost and am getting depressed not that I've put some back on. Please help! Also, have you added anything like Wellbutrin to hinder weight gain? Any help would be much appreciated.
Lizzy

I've found the weight gain on Celexa to be pretty steady. The increased appetite for carbs and the relaxation over getting to the gym has been terrible.

I feel I'm finally getting some control back, and I will add Wellbutrin if I have to (I dropped quite a bit of weight last time I tried it)

On the topic, what is the highest dose of Celexa people are taking. I had myself up to 50 mg/day and my new doctor said that was high. Every time I drop to 40 mg, however, social anxiety and other symptoms return.

I'd love to hear of others' experiences,

Thanks

Hi:

I'm on Celexa, 40 mg. at bedtime. My pdoc told me the research he's read is that a little more than half of patients need 60 mg. per day to realize the drug's full effects. He has patients at both doses (40 and 60 mg.)

Thanks for confirming my situation, Kathy! I've been taking Celexa since it was first approved, at various dosages (now 40 mg.). Throughout, I have been constantly fatigued (sleep at least 12 hours per day), have experienced shortness of breath, sweat like a stuck pig, have zero motivation, and have SLOWLY gained at least 40 lbs. The fatigue and lack of motivation keep me from getting to the gym, so the weight just gets worse---a vicious cycle. The mood, however, is pretty good. I was taking Prozac for many years prior to the Celexa---it was great, except for the death of my sex drive, which isn't significantly better, now. I really want to make a change, maybe to the new weekly Prozac, or better yet, to "SAMe". Who Knows??? Anyone have any thoughts???? Thanks!
