I've heard that about labs from the southern states. A friend recently adopted a gorgeous black lab pup from a rescue on the west coast.
Mabel was yellow, though tending more toward fox red. Bless her, the sweetest, most obedient soul except around food. During a supper party at our house, Mabel tried to down an entire wheel of brie.
I still remember her gagging, the looks on our guests' faces incredulous (they were yet unacquainted with life's more nitty gritty aspects that dogs expose us to; and yes, it was difficult to say, by the time we saw her, which direction the cheese was going, in or out), and my husband and I jumping up to rescue Mabel from the very pricey lump of french cheese lodging in her throat. Unabashed, she made a graceful social recovery, wagging her tail, and begging for seconds.
I love it.
