High LDL cholesterol is one of the main reasons for taking them, and yes, they are very good at reducing it.
The other common reason for taking them is to reduce risk of further cardiovascular incidents in someone who has already had an MI or other event. They can be useful in this scenario even if LDL cholesterol is not elevated.
