It's an alpha2-adrenergic agonist, a complex mechanism which gives it a long and varied list of indications. Besides ADHD some of the most common ones are high blood pressure; Tourette's; alcohol, benzo, opioid, and (of all things) nicotine withdrawal; and anxiety. It's sometimes used as a mild sedative. For people who have both ADHD and GAD (and some other anxiety disorders it doesn't help with panic disorder, though) who find that traditional treatments for each disorder exacerbate symptoms of the other, clonidine can be a godsend; it also helps when used in combination with a stimulant. Good luck with it; I hope it does the trick for you.
