Valproate without blood monitoring

Hello,

Basically I might be stuck in a situation where I won't be able to get blood monitoring when trying out VPA/Depakote. How serious is the risk for liver failure? I have no known physical health complications. If I end up trying it, which bad signs should I watch for? I'm guessing the risk for liver failure to the point where going to the ER wouldn't result in resolution is very rare? Anyone know the exact statistics? What's the dosage range for mood stabilization in general? I'm thinking of trying 500 or 1000 mg.
