I can tell you from my experience that yes, definitely, a stressful event can cause a downward slip. During stress you release major amounts of cortisol and stress can reduce seratonin, dopamine, and other neurotransmitters.

For me a stressful event can set off my depression especially if the stressful event doesn't completely metabolize. That is, sometimes a stressful event will stay with me for a while. If it does, then I'm having sustained stress and that's not good for my depression.

Also, changes in circadian rhythm such as a disruption in your sleep schedule can be depressogenic. I know that my chronic and persistant insomnia contributes to my depression.

I hope that helps.
