During my first several years with major atypical depression treated with high dosage Nardil, I gained over 100 pounds. Some was the atypical depression and some was the Nardil.Years later I have lost half of the weight, but am still struggling to rid myself of the additional pounds. I believe that Nardil saved my life. It does cause some major weight gain issues along with the atypical depression that it is the best at treating. When the choice is weight gain or death, I chose the weight gain. Less of two evils. Nardil augmented with clonazepam is the only combination that has worked for me out of 45+ different combinations of antidepressants and augmenters.
It is much harder to control the weight at high dosage. I have been on dosages up to 120mg. I am currently at 60mg and all of the side effects, including weight gain, are much better.
I was able to lose 50+ lbs through strenuous exercise. Sometimes up to 2 hours per day. When the atypical depression had me bedridden, exercise was next to impossible.
Nardil, at high dosages, really seemed to make me crave the sweet carbohydrates. I believe there is something else going on with the medication that overrides the bodies ability to quit eating when full. I could eat way past the point of being full to almost misery. This is a serious medication, with serious side effects. But when no other medication works, sometimes Nardil will be the answer.
