Re: Are qEEG or SPECT useful?

Posted by zatar on September 24, 2009, at 17:09:15

My daughter has been diagnosed with ADD, dysthymia, and generalized and social anxiety. She is on Zoloft 50mg and Wellbutrin XL 100mg daily. Increasing Zoloft or Wellbutrin doses cause her to become too hyper and psychostimulants have the side effect of increasing anxiety. Strattera caused depression. Lexapro didn't do much for the social anxiety and actually seemed to affect her memory (she would walk into a room and wouldn't know what she came in for...not normal in a teenager).

She is very inattentive and sometimes "out of it" and has no motivation. She handles stress very poorly and normal, everyday things (like brushing her teeth, doing her homework, showering) are suffering lately. She is tired all the time and I believe this chronic fatigue became noticeable after a bout with mono six years ago.

A qEEG years ago showed excess theta activity as well as beta 2 activity. Her PDoc has recently suggested having a SPECT scan done to see if it can suggest any additional medications to try.

What is the current thinking on using SPECT scans or qEEGs to determine medications and is there any indication for their use? Are they useful at all and if so, which would be better?

Thanks to all.
