Can nortriptyline make GAD/panic worse?

Posted by Emma28 on September 22, 2009, at 16:58:25

I've been through the ringer lately. I was on Celexa, klonopin and seroquel for unipolar depression, GAD and sleep. I also have Lyme disease. The celexa pooped out so.....

First we tried cymbalta in hopes that it would give me more energy and less pain. I couldn't tolerate it- it made me EXTREMELY anxious (I gave it about a month and the anxiety just got worse). So, I came off the cymbalta (withdrawal was NOT fun).

For the last six weeks I have been on 100mg of notriptyline and the klonopin (we stopped the seroquel for sleep)which has given me more energy, less pain but a LOT of anxiety. If I go above 100 mg I get constant anxiety.

So we are adding back in a small dose of celexa (20 mg) to see if it will help.

I thought tricyclics were sedating but a pdoc I spoke to told me that nortriptyline can be very activating. I do NOT do well with activating medications (Wellbutrin, cymbalta etc).

has anyone taken nortriptyline and had their anxiety go through the roof? I'm getting so frustrated and starting to doubt my doc who I've been seeing for 20 years!
