Finding the right dosage of MAOI

Posted by Zeba on August 9, 2008, at 17:05:04

I have posted about being on Parnate, and I have been on 40 mg. per day (20 in the a.m. and 20 mg. at noon). This was working very well, and I was not feeling depressed most days. Only once in awhile I would feel low after a difficult therapy session (I go three times per week). So my pdoc/therapist/analyst told me to reduce my Parnate to 20 mg. per day because I started to develop the sense of bugs crawling under my skin at the ankle area, and I could not keep my feet still. I have never heard of this with an MAOI, but once down to 20 mg. it seemed to be relieved. But, after a week I started having days when I would wake up in a profound depression like this morning. I just felt like someone was squeezing my brain, and it hurt so bad. I thought I can't live like this again. So, my doctor says to go up to 30 mg. for now and see how that is. If I need to go up again to 40 mg. and maybe higher, then what to do. Has anyone had this side effect from Parnate? I know it is common with antipsychotic medications, but I am not taking any of those. The only psychotropic medication I am on is Parnate. Thanks
