is nicotine an nicotinic ANTagonist??

Posted by iforgotmypassword on August 6, 2006, at 15:48:46

(THIS IS NOT A SUBSTANCE USE RELATED THREAD. PLEASE DO NOT REDIRECT, I AM USING NICOTINE AS PHARMACOLOGICAL REFERENCE.)

you would assume it is an agonist, but i figure maybe nicotine just marked the receptor in research and the receptor was named after it, regardless of the nature of the activity.

i ask this as nictotine seems to increase REM sleep, but then again so does wellbutrin a nictonic antagonist. i am interested in increasing anterior cingulate activity, and wondering if a wellbutrin/aricept of galantamine regimen would be more ideal, in case agonism also has pro-REM, and more importantly pro-anterior cingulate effects, or possibly even more favourably in this area.

nicotinic stimulation seems to be indirectly but significantly potently catecholaminergic, which makes it seem kind of awkward that stimulation would increase rather than decrease REM.

also is awkward and seems precarious when messing with acetylcholine receptors is that their seems to be some antagonistic behaviour between muscarinic and nictonic receptors. in the very least i have read that muscarinic activity diminishes nictonic receptor activity. i don't know if this means that their neuroanatomic activities, relating to what i want, are antithetical to each other... i do not want to cancel out the effect i want to try and cloud things.
