I'm wondering if Xyrem (sodium oxybate - a different chemical name for GHB) approved by the FDA in '05 for narcolepsy and cataplexy (manufactured by Orphan Pharmaceuticals), has ever been studied or considered as a treatment option for any mental illness such as anxiety or depression.
I remember when this was a supplement you could buy OTC at GNC. Apparently kids would take it recreationally with alcohol and go into respiratory failure from time to time. That led to it quickly getting yanked from the shelves.
I'm thinking it would have great potential to study for anxiety, and was wondering if anyone has heard anything in this regard. I believe they were studying opiates in the treatment of anxiety and depression. Curious to see if this will be something worthwhile in the future. If anyone has any information on this topic it would be appreciated. I know this was a schedule I med at one time after the whole date rape drug stigma was attached to this chemical. It's currently CIII. I'm not sure how addictive it would be really (I know what the CIII states for addictiveness, but androgens are also CIII and what a bunch of non-sense that is). If anyone has heard anything about the possible beneficial effects this would have for anxiety it would be interesting to hear. Thanks again.
