In reply to Is Wellbutrin + Lithium good for BP depression?, posted by Jimmyboy on August 1, 2006, at 17:41:26
JB,
I'm going to include a paragraph from an e-mail that I wrote a few months back (when I was in remission and writing wasn't the strenuous chore that it tends to be now) describing my experience with lithium and Wellbutrin. I was first diagnosed with dysthymia, then rediagnosed with bipolar disorder after I began cycling between mild hypomania and severe depression on 60 mg of Paxil. More recently, though, I was rediagnosed again, this time with major depressive disorder - recurrent.
Here's the description of my experience on the lithium-Wellbutrin combo:
"I actually responded partially -- but largely inadequately -- to the Wellbutrin-lithium combo that I took for approximately a year and a half. The combo basically allowed me to 'get by' and to succeed as a university student and [as a student worker], but to be honest with you, getting through each day put me through a severe emotional struggle. And in order to 'get by,' I almost always turned to large quantities of legal mood-boosting and energizing substances -- energy drinks (sometimes more than four a day), large amounts of coffee, and all different kinds of herbal and nutritional supplements -- to get me through the day. So, even though the response that I received from the Wellbutrin-lithium combo was somewhat favorable, I was still a long way from being in a state of remission."
Hope this helps some. And remember, YMMV (your mileage may vary).
