In reply to subutex questions / doctors etc etc....., posted by reese7194 on June 9, 2006, at 14:09:07
Hi, Reese. Was it you who posted about going to Mexico for buprenorphine?
> curious if anyone has found a doc to prescribe subutex that doesn't have that stupid license. i've read in some sites that you don't have to have the license to prescribe it off-label.
You don't have to have the DEA waiver in any state to prescribe Subutex or Suboxone to someone for depression (or pain) who is NOT an opioid addict and not in opioid addiction treatment. A doctor just needs a Schedule III certification, which virtually all of them have (like for Ritalin).
Alternatively, they can prescribe liquid Buprenex (Schedule V, I think), which never requires a DEA waiver.
My pdoc was actually willing to take the 8-hour course and get the DEA waiver, but then we discovered that she didn't need it. Have your pdoc talk to a top pharmacy in your area if he/she is still unsure about the law.
> i find the whole thing confusing. so anyone has any information i would appreciate it
Doctors do, too. They are notoriously misinformed about it. I put a collection of links on buprenorphine for depression here at Babble Tips: http://health.groups.yahoo.com/group/psycho-babble-tips/links/buprenorphine_for_de_001146748536/
> thanks
Thank you for asking. Spreading info on bupe-for-depression is one of my few positive accomplishments in life.
