Well I can tell when I need to go back on the ADs is when I do something really drastic - the first ever time I dropped everything suddenly and ran away to London for two weeks without telling a single soul where I was!! Whilst in london I would cry all the time, listen 'The Bends' by Radiohead etc....ha! I even managed to get the no less than three passers by on separate occasions asking if I was okay - which is remarkable considering I am a fully grown adult in the middle of London!!! Other times I have admitted myself into ER (well actually technically an NHS walk in centre but I doubt many here know what those are) because I couldn't stop cutting myself with a razor..........
Its very different for everyone. Also, I'm on ADs at the moment and but it still doesn't mean I don't think I am depressed - I am because I seem to think really dark thoughts all the time (I hate my life etc etc etc) but it just doesn't effect me in the same way that being AD free does. I guess it does let me function of sorts.
I can come of the meds, be fine for a few months then bam! I'm suddenly in a hole again.....and back on the meds.
