It could have an antidepressant effect by stimulating the reward pathway in the brain. That's why some people abuse xanax. But if taken properly, they could be theoretically used as an antidepressant, if you can keep that mild euphoria going that they can sometimes give. I don't recall xanax boosting serotonin. Another pathway it could be working is by reducing cortisol levels.
