SLEEP, glorious SLEEP

Posted by MidnightBlue on May 4, 2005, at 23:27:29

I read a very interesting article on Medscape today about sleep and how lack of it can effect your thyroid output as well as cause you to gain weight. Sorry, but I am not techno savy enough to link to the article. But it seems as little as 4 hours of sleep two nights in a row can really do you in. It can even mess with your blood sugar levels. And we all know a messed up thyroid will not respond well to ADs.

Anyway, years ago my favorite pdoc always said SLEEP was very important to my getting better and staying well. We tried a number of drugs to accomplish that, phenergan, trazadone, and eventually Ambien which I still take on and off.

The problem is I find myself getting at best a couple of nights of good sleep a week, but that is all. I am a much nicer person and feel much better both physically and emotionally when I actually do get enough sleep.

Has anyone else found that the lack of sleep affects them profoundly, and what do you do to get high quality sleep on a regular basis?

I am disabled and cannot exercise much. I do most of the "sleep hygiene" things like go to bed at the same time, limit caffeine, etc. What can you reasonably expect from various prescriptions? I wake up every hour or two all night long when I don't take Ambien.

I will probably start a new AD in the next few weeks. I do NOT need to gain weight and I do need to be able to sleep. Any suggestions? I did not respond to desiprimine, Prozac, elavil, triavil, Pamelor, Wellbutrin pooped out on me, and SSRIs give me migraines and stomach aches!

Oh yeah and one other bit of trivia--1/2 a can of sugared soda WITH caffeine will put me to sleep for another 3 hours if I drink it in the middle of the night!

Any thoughts or suggestions?
