Have you tried Klonopin (clonazepam)? It's chemically related to Xanax (also a benzodiazepine, although a different group) and is very powerful, yet subtle for most people. It can be very effective, and lasts much longer than Xanax. It's worth a try.
I find Lamictal a helpful mood stabilizer in addition to Klonopin, and quite calming, although opinions/reactions vary. With Lamictal, you have to increase the dose very gradually, so you get a chance to see how you react without diving in headfirst.
