In reply to NAMENDA ANYONE?, posted by scatterbrained on July 2, 2004, at 20:40:29
Hi.
Namenda (memantine) has been used in Germany for over a decade for Alzheimers, Parkinsons, and to a lesser extent, depression. It is currently being investigated by the NIMH, NIH for major depression. Others are looking at it for bipolar depression. Namenda is a perfectly reasonable choice to treat difficult cases of depression at this point, although its effectiveness has yet to be determined.

I am currently taking 20mg of Namenda in addition to a bunch of other stuff to treat bipolar depression. I experienced a significant and encouraging antidepressant response when I first started it, but it disappeared within a few weeks. Increasing the dosage to 30mg did not help. Increasing to 40mg produced a stuporous state. At 20mg, I experience no side effects. I am continuing with it in the hopes that it will act to augment some of the other medications that I am scheduled to try next.
Good luck! Please post of your progress. It is important that people report their experiences with Namenda.
