In reply to anyone here had ECT?, posted by Mike634 on July 2, 2004, at 14:06:34
ECT was very succesfull for me. It did have long term effects. Long term memorie loss, and probably things I will never remember or atleast for a long time. I had ECT in '97, atleast 30 or more. At one point, after many ECTs one day after the next, I woke up on a gurny and didn't know what anything was, I literaly thought I was just born. Very slowly over the years I remember things, for a while it was a chalenge to remember something. I was always proud if I had a memorie or understood something or just being able to have something to talk about, rather than a blank face. It was scary. More recently I feel much more like I can remember things, I feel more like me. Rather than a dead man walking. Occasionaly I have a dream and it will seem very real and I will wonder if it realy happened to me. Once I was talking to a very old freind and they reminded me of a time that I did this, I was thinking to myself, holy...., that was real. The first few are not that bad, more like a short term memore problem, but the frequency and number have the effect. Sure I have scared you enough, but it was honestly a scary thing, not remembering. Which is why they are so effective. They take a lot of bad memories and delete them from your head. Then meds work to keep them under control.
