In reply to anyone here had ECT?, posted by Mike634 on July 2, 2004, at 14:06:34
Hi Mike,
I had ECT about a year ago - 3 unilateral and 8 unilateral treatments. I did have some short term memory loss...some memories from that time are very fuzzy, others are missing completely. I don't believe that I've suffered any long term cognitive effects - I was able to return to grad school this spring and successfully completed the semester.
ECT was not at all helpful for my depression. Several months after my treatments, however, I was diagnosed with severe sleep apnea. My doctors agree, and I do too, that the sleep deprivation produced by the apnea was a contributing factor in my depression.
I know that ECT is successful for many people - I hope that if you go that route it is successful for you. The memory loss from my time in treatment was manageable - I'd be glad to share more or answer specific questions about my experience if you'd like.
Be well.
Merci
