Kara,
You are wise to check out this stuff before you go on an MAOI. I "practiced" the diet during the washout period before starting Nardil (I had been on Celexa and Wellbutrin). I wanted to make sure I could really do it. I followed the strict versions of the diet during this time and for a long time at first. The only time I "forgot" about the diet was on Thanksgiving. I had just had some dental work and was on Vicoprofen. I was scanning the food for obvious no-no's but also really looking at food texture to make sure I could chew without a lot of pain. (not the best timing, eh?)
Anyway, there were giblets in the dressing, which I never even thougth about. I had a massive headache for about two hours after eating. I first attributed it to referred pain from my teeth, but when I finally got a chance to check my BP (when headache was waning), it was slightly elevated.
Regarding eating out. I printed a card about the size of a business card with all of the no-no's on it. I usually pick out a dish or two and then tell the waiter I have some significant dietary issues and hand him/her the card. I ask them to check with the cook or chef to see what they recommend. Most places have been at least passingly helpful. More than a few have been really great about it. Having the card really helps. And then once I find a dish or two I can have, I remember that for next time I am there. Plus, you start to learn what works best in restaurants.
Good luck to you.
