hello there, chemist here.....anxiety_free is right on. sonata has a very very short elimination half-life and is prescribed for people who cannot fall asleep, but once they do, they generally stay so. ambien is longer-lasting, and is prescribed in lieu of benzos as the deep stages of sleep are preserved and ambien will not only put you to sleep, it will keep you asleep. depending on the dose of sonata, it is common to take another dose should you awaken in the middle of the night and have trouble going back to sleep....all the best, chemist
