HTN is a potential side effect of Effexor therapy, and is related to the norepi uptake inhibition. As the med is working so well for you, consider taking an anti hypertensive med such as Altace. It has precious few side effects, has virtually no CNS side effects (e.g. depression), is covered by insurance; as an "ACE inhibitor" is being recommended to everyone over 55 as a cardioprotective medication whether they are hypertensive or not.
I realize taking a med to cover the side effects of another med can seem nonsensical, but peace of mind is priceless.
