We have a 6 and half year old daughter. She is diagnosed with Type 2 early onset childhood bipolar. We have tried since age 3 yrs and 10 months to find the right medication for her. So far we have not had a great deal of success. She was first diagnosed with oppositional defiant disorder and prescribed Respirdal for that. She ended up on 3mg per day which in turn has given her movement problems. We then switched her to prozac for a diagnosis of OCD with ODD. Prozac made her manic within a few days. She could not eat could not sleep, and could not concentrate for longer than 5 seconds. We then got a diagnosis in May of last yr of childhood bipolar. This is the one that really fits our daughter. So she came off the prozac and started Celexa and lithium together. Lithium stabilized her devastating mood swings but the Celexa made her more irritable, more aggressive, no appetite and was not with it. We stopped the Celexa and swithched to Effexor 112.5ng per day. Started at 75 and went up. She was still on her lithium and now the ap Chlorpromazine was added into the mix. The violent episodes with us were increaseing. She was falling apart at school every day. We fought to get her off the Effexor after we placed her in voluntary foster care because we cant deal with her violence and threats. She has attempted suicide once already, and we needed to make sure someone was watching her every move. The lithium seems to work somewhat but we have asked about another mood stabilizer to add to the mix. We have heard that Gabapentin is a drug that is used when most medications failed miserably and or the patient is resistant to most meds. I would really like to have anyone contribute with a response. What meds helped your child if you are a parent and have the same problems. Thanks one and all
