nortriptylin for many years

Posted by John Ohlson on November 5, 2003, at 18:55:58

I have been on 50 mg nortriptylin once-daily maintenance therapy for over a decade against recurrent melancholic depr. It has worked very well without relapses after I started continous medication. If I get depressed feelings, mostly due to overwork, I add an extra 25 mg tablet and it resolves.
Slightly dry mouth and sweating, 10% up resting heart rate and weight gain 20 pounds are side effects I can live with (I have recently lost 15 pounds thanks to exercise).
Since most people I know are on SSRI's , I asked my pdoc if I should switch but since nortrip works well with no sexual side effects she adviced against.
I just wonder if anyone knows of long term side effects w this drug?
