About a year ago, I walked into my pharmacy and discovered that the pharmacist who had been there for several years had abruptly left. I have no idea why he left or where he went. I do know that I haven't felt quite the same level of security since. This guy had been there through every one of my interminable med changes, and had the opportunity to see me at my depressed worst. In the beginning I was using so many different things and frequently had very short term prescriptions so I was in there alot. We never talked much but he was great with questions when I asked and we talked enough for me to realize that he knew my name and could place me together with my meds history. Since I really didn't share the presence of my illness with others, it was okay not to have to pretend anything with him. I was in my pdoc's office one day when he called in a prescription for more meds even though I was mid-prescription on the same medication. I could tell just from listening to one end of the call that the pharmacist was questioning him pretty closely about this and that my pdoc was a little taken aback over having to explain himself to my pharmacist. I found it very reassuring to know that this guy was paying enough attention to question something that didn't seem to make alot of sense on face. The point is that the retail pharmacist plays a critical role and while he can be invisible to some patients he can also be very important to others.
